PDF merge book chapters on Quark 9 ?

One of the disappointments with Quark 8's book panel is that chapters had to be output to PDF individually and then compiled in Acrobat. Has this changed in Quark 9 to be able to output a complete chaptered book as a single PDF like InDesign? Add to that is InDesign will recognize left and right Master Pages on the fly so that the resulting compiled PDF will arrange the pages based on where the previous chapter ended and before the next chapter begins. In other words, it will move a page to either its left or right Master Page depending on where the previous page ended. In Quark 8, this was a headache to have built the PDF chapters into a book in Acrobat only to find out that a left/right shift in pagination later in the book would throw off the rest of the pages. Example, I'd end up with a right Master page on the left side rather than dynamically shifting to the correct placement during the PDF process. If I am missing a step here, please correct me but I've asked this of Quark support in the past and they couldn't help.

File Names

Perhaps some of what I want to do is just hidden from me. If that's the case, a more robust help file would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, please consider the following: 1) multiple pages 2) snapping to margins, grids, other entities 3) importing other files (like Pages or Word) so that they can be worked on in DesignPad 4) creating objects like lines or arrows or text that isn't in a box 5) drop shadows and other features that can be applied to text or other non-box items 6) freehand box shaping 7) copying boxes on the page

Colours on Eps Logos in Quark 9.5

Hi there, My old logos in Quark 8.5 are changing colour in Quark 9.5 I thought I'd fixed this issue last week with the help of a thread here, but it seems to have come back and although I've done the follwing and it now works... "* open your document, go into Preferences > Color Manager and check Color Manage Vector EPS/PDF, and Include Existing. Then select the View menu > Proof Output > Composite CMYK (or some custom color setup if you have one)." ... I have a version of the logo I copied in with the same colour change. However, I also have "exactly the same eps" opened in another picture box, and the colour on that one is now fine. So... two picture boxes, same eps, same settings... different colours. Any ideas? Problems with license

Hi. We recently bought an APP Studio Factory Single Publication license to publish an App which is associated to App Studio Issue License Pack-1 Issue Pack. As a consequence of some problems/mulfunctioning of the AVE publishing portal we were not able to use this license and had to buy a second one to complete the procedure. We would like to you if it is possibile to unlock license not used in order to use it in the future Thanks Marco

Print to Web advice

Hi, I am a long time Quark user but have restricted it's use to print design preferring to use Dreamweaver as a web app. Having said that I would describe my knowledge of Dreamweaver as poor. I have a 176 page book set-up for print. I would like to make each spread a web page. Where do I start? Does anyone know the best step by step without having to read a manual? Cheers.

unable to obtain installation code Q9

Purchased QXP 9.5.1.1 this morning, registered the product and proceeded to activate QXP–but I'm giving up. Support page reads: "To find the installation code, launch QXP and navigate to the activation screen" . All I get is the QXP Setup Assistant and there's absolutely no activation screen! Obtaining the Validation code has also proved impossible as the serial number printed on my invoice is not accepted.

Suggestions anyone?

script to resize and move items on a page

Hello, I have several Quark docs that are over 100 pages. Each file needs to be sized and have it's contents on it's page moved to specific x and y coordinate. I did find this helpful post http://forums.quark.com/p/19679/78882.aspx#78882 but this issue was for far less pages. Although the script at this site useful, I can't see myself using it because I would have to copy and paste and change each page number. Another factor is I don't think all the items on the page are grouped. Would it be worth adjusting the script in the link above? Or is there an easier way that I'm overlooking? Lastly, I don't know anything about scripting other than VERY easy editing of an already existing one. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Spinning Beach Ball when deleting paragraph text…

For some strange reason when I try to delete a paragraph of text I get the dread spinning beach ball.
Deleting single word here and there works fine… anyone encounter this problem in 9.5.1?

Quark Crash Reporter does not work in 9.5.1… and there's no way to Quit it?

Quesiton: How to make an Advertising Banner for Google's Display-Network with a valid "clickTAG" used in a swf document created from QuarkXPress (9.3).
The *.swf-File needs to be uploaded to the Google AdWords-Platform and there is no *.html allowed, so it is necessary to have a right prepared single *.swf-File to upload there.

Error message from the Google AdWords Portal: Flash Error: The ad can not have network objects.
without the variables, there is the known error that clickTAG function not linked. Please provide a clear step-by-step solution fully functioning. IF you have a solution that works, screenshots might be helpful.
It would be a shame to switch to an adobe product to get this fixed... thanks, Christian

external reference image

Hi, I have been struggling for some time to reduce flash files to under 50k. Have tried all options suggested on quark faq, and still cant manage this. However I tried the option-display image, then external reference. I tried file, which has a path to an image on my hard drive. All works fine using 3 different pics, any file is 45k - perfect! and images look sharp....however when I export to swf. and send to third party, they can't see the images. Is this because they are local to me so I can view them fine?. If so how do I extenally reference pics, do they need to be on a server...the clients server? and how do they go about that, do they set up a url for me, and can I then upload images to it, and the object-display image - external reference - url? Can I create a web page myself, with pics on it. how do I get a url?

Find and replace script in Quark 4

I need a bit of advice, Im not really a Quark user. But anyway... I have been given a (really) old version of quark. Quark 4, and is a 50+ page catalog with prices (set like this > £xx.00 or £xxx.00) and I just need to replace with -- on all the prices is there a script of some sort to run which will do it or is it just a case of going though copy and pasting? thanks in advance for anyone who can help.

OS Bar in iPad

I see that the OS bar in the iPad layout can be turned on or off, but I also see that the new App Studio documentation (page 11) advises users to have it turned off for AVE export but on for the new App Studio export.

What's the story here – is this something that Apple now prefers developers to leave visible for this kind of product?
Is it in fact possible to hide it in new App Studio-based productions?

What are the dimensions we should know about? I see that the page is automatically adjusted when this Layout Properties option is toggled, but what should I know about the page sizes if I want to create pixel-perfect graphics for use in iPad layouts?

images within quark doc

Hi I have recently upgraded to Quark 9.1 from a very old version 6. I used to be able to double click on an image placed within the document which would then let me open the image directly in order to edit it. This does not work in this version. Also, clicking on the image and pressing 'command i' would give me the name and place of the image. Again this does not now work! Can anyone help me out there? thanks

Apply style to all occurrences of a word

I am thinking of making the switch from ID. One of the key feature I find myself using often with ID is grep styles to change the style of every occurrence of a certain word in my document.

For example, doing catalog, 200+ pages. Would like to apply my own custom style to the word CODE: evertime it appears.

Is this possible with QuarkXPress 9?

Invalid Licence File or Host ID

Just updated the iMac computer we are using as the server to Mountain Lion (10.8.2). After the update the QLA Server will not run, meaning we can operate QuarkXPress. We get the message INVALID LICENSE FILE OR HOST ID when the QLA Server is launched. I have uninstalled the QLA Server and QLA Client and reinstalled. I have downloaded a QLA License File and still it is not working. Some assistance would be most appreciated as we have several users who can not check a license. Is there a compatibility issue with Mountain Lion?

I am making header cards and the verbiage on them needs to be in three languages and I need help getting the line above some of the letters. I know (option e) puts a line above the e, but I need one above the letter a, what are the keys for doing that? Thanks

High Resolution Preview is poor quality

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with the "High Resolution Preview" option in Quark 9.

In Quark 8, everything was perfect, the High-Res preview was decent quality (nice and clear).

However, in quark 9, the preview seems to be rubbish.

Here's what I'm getting -

(Quark 9 file, picture box with an imported EPS in it).

As you can see, the preview isn't good at all on the 'High res setting'

Any ideas anyone ?

Trapping in 9???

We have just upgraded our mac and relevant software, including moving from Quark 7.3 to 9.3.

It has been a bit of a learning curve, fewer tools etc. It has more of an InDesign feel to it now.

I have used QuarkXpress since the beginning in 1987 and have been almost evangelical in telling people about its benefits etc.

BUT…!!

…it turns out that since Quark 9, trapping/choking is no longer support??????? What????

Two issues.

One: As a printer we require colours to trap and to have control over the amount of trap or choke depending on colour combinations etc. This is an essential process in producing high quality print products.

Two: This change in functionality is not mentioned anywhere in publications relating to the release of QX9 or in any of Quarks own documentation. There are three or four sections within the user manual that state

“Beginning with version 9.0, the application no longer supports spread and choke trapping.

Spreads and chokes that you set up with the Trap Information palette (Window menu)

will not be applied at output. However, overprints and knockouts are honored.”

If this had been known previously, it may have affected our decision to waste money on investing in the upgrade.

Creative Suite may be the way forward now instead.

Are we alone in feeling slightly bitter over this drop in functionality or does every printer out there now have post process control of trapping???

How do you all feel about what must surely be an important issue for most printers?

Bug in QXP 9.5.1.1

Hello,

there is a bug in QXP's handlung of contextual ligatures in Open Type fonts. Although in the (italic) font I am using the feature clig (contextual ligatures) is ON, QXP does not show these ligatures. All other ligature features work fine. The corresponding glyphs are, of course, present in the font and they show up correctly in Adobe Indesign.

I did not find any bug report page within the QXP website. Hoping Quark is interested in reports.
