I had a manual in version 6, and I recently upgraded to 8. When I tried to open the manual, I located the file, but it's empty when I open it. All the pages are gone, images, everything. File size is 1k. Where did it all go?

Insufficient memory to rasterize a transparent element

Ever since I updated to 7.3 I am unable to create a PDF, print or save an eps that has a drop shadow in the document. I have upped the virtual memory to1024mb and that made no difference. Does anyone have any suggestions... I am dying here!

Q7.2 - How do you colour manage a CMYK doc to a CMYK laser printer?

Hi we recently bought a Konica Minolta 8650DN printer and we would like to be able to apply a colour workflow to it from Quark 7.

We have managed this from Indesign CS3 - which we also use - and the proofs look great. All we did was set a document profile (Fogra39) and a printer profile (An icc created for the Konica) in the Indesign CS3 print dialog and the proofs are fine.

I really dont understand how Quark does the equivalant. I've tried applying the printer profile as an output CMYK profile and set the placed pictures to be CMYK fogra39 but the laser proofs never seem to change no matter what I do with the profile settings!

Any help would be appreciated.

Snow Leopard Quark 7.5 fonts shifting Issues

I was on 10.5.8 and qurak 7.31. I upgraded Quark to 7.5 and upgraded to 10.6 (Snow Leopard).

Now when I open documents made pre-upgrade my fonts are moving from where they were. To a new lower positon. examples:

Before Update. 10.5.8 and Quark 7.31

After Update. 10.6 and Quark 7.5

The blue is becuase the text is highlighted during the screen capture. The way I got these captures is that I have 2 macs at my business. One is updated, one isn't. Other than the update, the 2 machines are identical. This is actually the same file on our server open at the same time on both machines.

This is very bad!

I can't have the type in the hunderds of layouts I've created in the past 10 years in Quark suddenly shifting around. It would take untold hours to fix everything. And then what if someone who hasn't updated opens my "updated" files? Will it shift back?

Like I said this is the exact same file. It lookes like baseline shift has been applied or vertical center is on, but it's not. What is going on?

Has anyone here actually called Quark about the Snow Leopard issues?

(Mac OS 10.6 only) In an Interactive layout, if you create a Video object and choose a local (not external) movie file, then export the layout as an SWF file, the video displays incorrectly in the SWF file. (12450)
(Mac OS 10.6 only) If you try to export a layout as PostScript (File > Print > Printer > choose Save as PostScript from PDF button) to a shared network location, the file prints to the default printer instead. (7731)
(Mac OS 10.6 only) You cannot print a layout that includes in imported raster EPS file to an HP Color LaserJet® 5500 PS. (11549)

No mention of the fonts shifting issue. Has anyone contacted support about the font shifting issue? Quark was obviously unaware of it before SL came out and they show no evidence of reading their forums. A respone would be nice.

If noone has contacted them about the type shifting issue then I might tomorrow, but I'm probably just going to get a BS response that 7.5 isn't supported under SL. And I'm not too keen on the idea of giving this compnay any more money right now.

Quark 8 does not print to pdf under leopard

My company just recently upgraded al macs to 10.5.8. Now Quark 8.0.2 would not print to pdf any more, i.e. it looks like as if it would print but then the pdf printer just flushes the job without any warning and no pdf is produced.

I tried the upgrade to Quark 8.1 but to no avail. Printing to PDF looks fine at the beginning but then the print job just disappears in a black hole again. I also upgraded to Acrobat 9 and Adobe PDF 9.0 but still the same result.

Saving a ps file and distilling manually works fine but I really would need a fix for printing directly to PDF. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Interactive novice - item doesn't appear

I'm having my first stab at an interactive layout, though an experienced used of XPress. I've created a simple looped animated movement sliding a box along a line when the user press a 'play now' object. This works fine in Flash preview. However when I've created a 'please stop' box with an action to stop the animation, it does work in Flash preview, but the graphic/text box doesn't appear on the screen (and can be activated only because I know where it is .. and the cursor changes shape). Any clue as to what fundamental principle I've missed?? Grateful for any pointer. Judith

Convert QXP to Image (JPEG)

Hi, all,

a few of you have asked how to convert a QuarkXPress layout or portions of it to a pixel image,namely JPEG or TIFF.

Here's how to save a group of elements as JPG (or GIF or PNG):

1. Convert your Print layout to Web layout (by choosing menu "Layout > Layout Properties" and setting layout Type to "Web").

2. Group the elements you want to convert to JPG (eg. the whole page if needed).

3. Open Modify dialog (menu "Item > Modify") and navigate to last tab "Export".

4. Check "Convert to Graphic upon Export".

5. In "Export As" choose "JPEG" (or whatever you desire) and click "Ok". Note (or change) the "File Name"(first field).

6. Choose "File > Export > HTML". Enter the page number you want to export.

7. Look in the Finder/Explorer folder to which you exported. There should be a folder called "image" which contains your group (and has the same file name as set in step 5).

Should work in all versions from QuarkXPress 5 to 8, Mac & Win.

Power Tip
Instead of converting (in step 1) you can also duplicate the layout ("Layout > Duplicate"). If you then synchronize your items (QuarkXPress 7 and 8 only) then you always have a copy from which you can quickly export a JPG, even if the elements in the Print layout have changed.

Quark 8 preview resolution

hi, we switched to quark 8 from quark 6.5, but now having a big problem in our workflow.

we are creating huge maps in freehand and load this maps as eps into quark layouts. in quark 6.5 the preview was good enough to see details we need to put some extra information on the map in the layout.

but now, since we use quark 8, the preview is very bad. the following picture shows the differences. the first row shows one sample, the second row another sample.

first picture in column shows the preview up to version 6.5. in the second column, the eps-preview is created by quark (Preferences->EPS->Generate). The third column shows the preview with the setting EPS->Embedded.

Any ideas how to increase the quality?

FontStubs folder? Problems Extensis Universal Type Server font activation

Can anoyne tell me, what the FontStubs-folder is used for? (user->Library->Preferences->Quark8->Jaws->FontStubs->WesternFonts)

We are using Universal Type Server 2. But some fonts are not auto activated, when a document is opened. When we try to activate them manually, an error tells us, that font activation could not be completed because of an operating system activation error.

We guess, that the font is already on the system and because of that, Universal Type Server does not activate the font.(occurs not only for this one font.. in this case, it's Formata BQ Regular)

We only found in FontStubs some PS-Files, which are named like fonts. When they are deleted, they are replaced automatically....

We are using OS 10.4.11.

underline styles set to overprint

Hi everyone,

I just learned, that the underline styles in version 8.1.2 (and earlier) / MacOS are automatically set to overprint. Is there any known use for it? I couldn't find any topic on that.

I suppose it can be quite dangerous, esp. when you are working with saved underline styles throughout a document with background colors or if you choose to combine them with rules (paragraph attributes).

The only workaround seems to be changes in the trap information palette or in the trap specifications (for an entire document!).

Any idea on this?

Selecting individual grid elements in tables

I'm gradually warming to Quark tables, but there's still one feature that baffles me.

My job requires very simple tables. 3 columns, 3 rows. The top row is coloured in a dark tint. Columns 1 and 3 are coloured in a light tint. The only actual grid line I want to see is the bottom one. It needs to be 1pt in weight and coloured as the dark tint.

No matter how hard I try, I can't click on the bottom rule. So I select horizontal grid, make them ALL 1pt, then I can click on the 'middle' one and set it to 0, but I can't set the top one to 0. Is there a trick for clicking on these rules? I know it's easier if they already have a weight but I just can't make it happen. (In ID I could do it very easily....)

PS Forgot to mention - these tables are anchored in a text box, just to make everything really simple!

Automated Find & Replace from Excel???

I have a catalog with approximately 4000 products in a Quark document. Each product has an existing SKU number. The catalog is being re-printed for a different client and needs ALL the SKU numbers to be changed (everything else stays the same). I have an Excel spreadsheet with two columns of information: Column A has the existing SKU number and Column B has the new SKU number. Is it possible to some how automate Quark's Find & Replace feature (or other feature?) to search for each existing SKU number (column A from the spreadsheet) and replace it with its corresponding new SKU number (column B from the spreadsheet) in the Quark document? Replacing each SKU number manually would be a painfully slow process. I only have regular QuarkXPress...NO Quark Server or Dynamic Publishing Products. Thanks, Jon :-)

Help, Quark 8 can't print Chinese properly

I am working on some Chinese fliers on Mac. All the chinese are properly shown in Mac. But when I print out, I find that only some chinese appear and other show as unreadable code. Also the lay out changes a bit. Could anybody tell me how to solve it? Thanks in advance.

Move paths from Illustrator to QuarkXPress

Here's a neat little trick for converting Illustrator paths to editable QuarkXPress paths (actually it works with any application that can paste paths to Photoshop). It requires XPert Box Tools, a component of XPert Tools (free for QuarkXPress 7 users).

1. Select the path in Illustrator and copy it to the clipboard
2. Create a document in Photoshop (size & color model doesn't matter)
3. Open the Paths palette and paste
4. Select Paste As Path in the Paste dialog. This will paste the paths into a new work path.
5. Double-click the work path on the Paths palette to name it and save it
6. Save the image as a TIFF and import it into a QuarkXPress layout
7. From either the Measurements palette or Modify dialog, go to the Clipping tab and select Embedded Path as the Type (it will default to the first path it finds)
8. Select Item > Picture Box Shape From Path > New Box From Clipping Path
9. If necessary use Item > Split to separate compound paths
10. Delete the picture content from the resulting box (I usually change its Content Type to None)
11. Color and style them as needed in QuarkXPress

This technique only works one path at a time, but it can handle compound paths so you can gang up a bunch of paths and convert them all at once if you like. There are also limitations to how closely you can match the styling of the original if it used a thick stroke (since QuarkXPress does inside or outside frames instead of strokes), but if you've ever considered recreating a complex shape in QuarkXPress you'll find this to be a good timesaver.

drop shadows disappear when I make a PDF

I am trying to make a PDF. The file has a photo background and there is type on top of it. The type has a white drop shadow appllied. Whenever I make a PDF, no matter what resolution, I cannot get the drop shadow to show up. Any ideas?

Placeholders/Cut Paste on QuarkXPress 7 Passport

I have upgraded from QuarkXPress 6 to QuarkXPress 7 Passport.

I am now running an Applescript that I created to run on Quark 6, I'm now testing it in Quark 6. Most of my script runs fine, however I'm having problems with a cut and paste/placeholder section.

Part of my script creates a picture box, assign a background colour to it, then creates a text box on top and places a number in the centre. The script then selects and groups these boxes, cuts the group, and where the script has placed a placeholder in another text box, pastes the group.

He's the part of the code that creates the placeholder, creates the boxes, groups them, cuts them and pastes in Quark 6:

problems with pdf and drop shadow/opacity

I have created a piece of artwork in Quark 7.5 which consists of a round picture box (which has a drop shadow). The picture box is positioned so that it slightly overlaps 2 large circles of colour. These 2 circles overlap each other also - the bottom one is a solid pantone colour, the top one is a pantone colour but with an opacity of 75%.

After creating a high quality pdf file, the pdf does not display (or print) these circles/picture box correctly. It looks as if there is a slightly transparent square picture box just below the round picture box but on top of the coloured circles. This only appears to happen when the round picture boxes are positioned on top of the circle which has a 75% opacity.

I can't figure out how to fix it. I tried making the coloured circles cmyk instead of pantone but that didn't fix it. I've also tried increasing the resolution of the drop shadows in the pdf settings but that didn't work either.

Can anyone help?

Adobe Printer driver disabled under Snow Leopard

Evidently for reasons of security, Adobe's postscript printer driver is now disabled in Snow Leopard. Some information about this is here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/300660 Acrobat Distiller is also disabled. I publish my books with Lightning Source, and they have very specific instructions for setting up the .ps prior to distiling. But in Snow Leopard these instructions cannot be followed. The suggestion "use the popup menu and select Adobe PDF" seems not to be adequate because the very specific settings cannot be chosen. I've got a bug in with LS on this, but... has anyone a workaround?
