UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

    Locked Reply Contact
Quark has recently released a system patch that works in conjunction with QuarkXPress 7.3 to fix the problem of no PDF being created when printing to the Adobe PDF Printer created by Acrobat on Mac OS.

If you are experiencing this problem, please download and install the patch here.

UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

Dave, I get an installation failure while installing the cups filter. I am running 10.5.1 Dutch Leopard and get a failure message "Installation failed, run postflight script for install Quark CUPS Filter". Take contact with Quark. What goes wrong here?

All my Adobe postscript printers do not work at the moment (they are paused and won't finish the jobs for certified PDF production) Using the 7.31 update of Xpress gives a new problem: a message that font Courier is not embedded. I now use Quark pdf export to generate PS files and then run Instant PDF on them. That works.

But a good solution would be very, very welcome!

    Kind regards,

    Julius

UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

    Hello Julius,

The current available CUPS Patch Installer for QuarkXPress is not compatible with Leopard. The reason it is failing on the post-flight check is that after installation, we try and force-quit CUPS to have the changes take effect. In Tiger, CUPS was always running but in Leopard, it isn't. So, the installation was actually successful but the CUPS restart is failing. This is something we are working on.

As for the problem you are having, it appears to be bigger than our CUPS Patch as Adobe Acrobat is not compatible with Leopard. Adobe has stated they will be releasing an update sometime in Jan 2008. I have seen many posts about this exact issue in the Adobe forums which you can find here.

As for the Courier issue... I have not heard of that problem and could not reproduce it on my machine (10.5.1 US English). My recommendation is to use our Direct PDF Export until Adobe releases an official update to Acrobat for Leopard. As someone who came from a production environment and used to rely on Distiller, I can honestly say that our Direct Export is greatly improved and see less and less of a need for Distiller.

    Hope this helps.

UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

Thanks for the reply Dave. In my working environment All the PDF files should be certified. We use Instant PDF for that.

For the Courier issue, excuse me, I had to be more specific. Instant PDF adds the direct export to CPDF option in the Xpress menu. If you choose that option you end with the Courier error.

I posted the problems also to Enfocus and they are looking also at the problems under Leopard (Instant PDF is NOT Leopard ready yet). The only way -at least what I found out- is indeed use your native PDF export, save as PS file, ofcourse with the good color settings etc. and feed those directly to Instant PDF. That works fine. It would be great if the next Instant PDF update could use your native PDF engine! Have a chat with the engineers at Enfocus!

    Kind regards,

    Julius

UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

Is this CUPS fix still necessary with Acrobat Pro v8.12?

Using MacOs 10.5.2, Acrobat 8.12 and QuarkXpress 7.3.1, I still don't seem able to print successfully to a Distiller PPD, ie it goes through all the motions but produces no PDF file.

Export to PDF works ok though - which PPD does that use?

It uses Quark JAWS filter. It's not for graphic loaded files – it will produce pdf that are large in size (megabytes-wise).

UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

So the sales rep at Quark suggested I try the evaluation copy of 7.3 to see if I wanted to upgrade from 6.5. Love the interface but I can't print--at all. I have a Canon IR3220 with the latest drivers and an (admittedly old) HP 4MV LaserJet--can't print to either of them from 7.3; they work fine with every other software package. If I can't print, obviously, I'm not upgrading. I tried to install the CUPS upgrade, but as Dave indicated, it doesn't work with Leopard. This may be the shortest evaluation I've ever done if I can't print--I'll remove the software today.

    Any suggestions?

UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

    Barry,

We're running 10.5 Leopard with Quark 7.3 overhere with a Xante Accellawriter , A Xerox 4400, HP 5000, an Epson 2100 and even a stockold Epson 750 Photo printer. They all work. What I did after installation of Leopard is the complete new building of every printer in the system. Did you do that? It could be the origin of the troubles you have now.

Besides check if your XPress 7 really sees the drivers of your printers, you can find that in functions > PPD manager. Your drivers should be there. I think however the last point does not give you the real trouble. If the correct driver is not found you can always print in the standard B&W ppd, however without the special features of each printer.

    Check it out!

    Kind regards, Julius

    Hi Julius,

What did you mean by by doing a, "complete new building of every printer on the system?" Is that something you do within CUPS?

No not with CUPS, just open systempanel, check printing and faxing and add there your new printers. My experience is that especially when you upgrade from Tiger to Leopard the old printers and settings do migrate too. But some did not work correctly with Quark. So I created in 'printers and faxing' my printers again and trashed the old ones. Check on the fly if the system finds the correct PPD's In our case that went completely automized and well exept for the Epson RIP. I did that one manually.

    Kind regards, Julius
