UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

We're running OS X 10.5.2, Acrobat 8.1.2 and Quark 7.3.1. The Cups fix (v1.0.1) installed fine on the first machine. We're working on the next two machines and the installation is failing. On those machines we've also installed our old version of Quark 6.1. Could that be causing the failure? Otherwise, what could be the issue?

UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

    Hi, trekboy,

CUPS is an Operating System function, therefore whether having QuarkXPress 6 installed should not make a difference.

Please call our tech support, I am sure they can help you too.

    Thanks

Re: UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

Dave I am messing with Adobe LiveCycle their PDF forms builder. I'm trying to figure a way to build forms in Quark, save them as PDF. My questions is that the Livecycle generates live fill-in fields. Do you know if these would move from Quark - PDFs to recognized LiveCycle fill-in fields if I generated those fields as Quark tables?

    Similar needed for Quark 8.

    PowerMac G5, 2.7DP, 8Gb RAM; OSX 10.4.11 and 10.5.8 (on separate drives). (Also a PowerMac 7300 that's still running Quark 4.1 on OS 8.6 ...)

We have the same problems. Quark 8, Leopard 10.5.5. All other applications inlcuding InDesign, Illustrator, PS3 (CS3), can create PDFs fine.

In fact, Quark can't print to any Postscript Printer at all.. The same error message %%[ Error: rangecheck; OffendingCommand: setcolorscreen ]%% shows upin all error logs.

Export to PDF does not work, Export to PS works, but the PS is not pdf-able.

Printing to PDF gives same error messages.

Re: UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

Hi- I see that you are using Instant PDF. Also noticed the wish - "It would be great if the next Instant PDF update could use your native PDF engine! " I am in the process of testing and setting up Instant PDF here. I have version 4.12. In the PDF Queue Editor, under each Application, you can link to a settings file that will process the PDF through the native engine. At least that's my understanding of it. The tests I've done give me results consistent with what I'm used to. Using PDF Profile to create the output, so far has given me mixed results. I feel more comfortable creating a pdf using my standard settings. And it is still measured up against the Pitstop Preflight Profile for certification. I'd be interested in your feedback on Instant PDF. How do you like it? How do you use it? I'm just in the process of testing it. We plan to provide a few of our clients with it so they can send us Print-Ready pdfs. The road block I have that brought me here is, I can't save a settings file for Quark 6.5. Any input? I wish I could tell clients to keep up with progress, but you know that just ain't gonna happen.

Re: UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

    Hello

    MAC OSX 10.5.5 / Quark XPress Passport v7.5 / Adobe v8.1.3 / Adobe v9.x

Our DTP guy seems to have no output when printing directly to the Adobe v8 or v9 printer with above system. Does the CUPS v7.3 filter still need to be applied to QX v7.5, as I see no specific patch for v7.5? Currently he uses a workaround whereby he prints to postscript file and then submits to Adobe printer, but if I can get this to work on a direct print it would be quicker, better etc., thnx.

    Morpheus

Re: UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

Yes, the CUPS patch needs to be applied to the OS for all versions of QuarkXPress up to (and including) version 8.02.

QuarkXPress 8.1 includes the patch, so no need to apply it anymore.

    Thanks

    Thanks

The CUPS filter worked for me on QX v7.5 and Adobe v9, fyi though I got a blank page with Adobe v8. Maybe this is because I have both Adobe V8 & 9 printers installed, but this is Ok it works for my DTP guy on 9 :)

Re: UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

Hi, I am running Snow Leopard (10.6) Quark 8.15 and Acrobat Pro 9.31. How do you make a high res pdf with crop marks and bleed?

I know you have use the 'save as adobe pdf' function but it doesn't allow you to change page size and have all of the options that were available when there was a Acrobat ppd. Also The low res pdf file I made was larger in file size than the supposedly high res pdf. How does that work?

We have been producing pdfs with the 'print' function and the acrobat ppd for years and now the whole workflow has changed which is very annoying.

This is a big step backwards as far as I am concerned in producing pdfs which is the only way for production these days. I am trying to be loyal to Quark as I have been using Quark for atleast 15 years but it is not making things easy.

I am always sorry I upgrade my computer and then forced to upgrade all programs usually with no real additional benefits.

Are you able to tell me how to produce a high resolution pdfs with bleed. Page size A4 with 5mm bleed all around

    Thanks

    Tony

Re: UPDATE: Fix for problem Printing to Adobe PDF Printer

    Hi Tony,

as Adobe did this change (and state that Apple is responsible) there's not much Quark can do:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html

    Adobe:
The Adobe PDF Printer is not available or is unusable in Mac OS X Snow Leopard (v10.6). This situation is due to security features in Snow Leopard that disable the Adobe PDF Printer.

You might want to talk to Adobe about this and post back as I am sure it would be interesting for all here to hear what they say.

To fix this issue you might try PDF Export (under File menu). Besides allowing native transparency in PDF it also choose the correct "paper" size automatically, gives you compression and downsampling options and much more. The better way to create PDF really.

    Will that work for you?

    Best
    Matthias
