Newbie:: excel to quark template? Possible

As a web programmer I have limited knowledge of the workings of quark outside of my web desitner but urgent need to establish if its possible to create an automatic transfer of data from excel to Quark or possibly an intermediate app like xml.

    Scenario
    ----------
    Inventory excel spreadsheet contains following:
    Boat Model
    Boat Size
    Boat Price
    Boat Location
    Boat Category: Power or Sail

Is it possible to someway get this <data> into a quark template and thus save the web designer from having to manually type this data in. It is becoming critical....

I hope this question is not too naive and you can guide me in the right direction.

My xml skills are basic and my quark skills low...I have not used it in years but believe the solution is more important than than day to day use.

    I appreciate any help here!

    Best regards
    Jason

Try looking for a third party software to import Excel (or at the very least CSV) files. This you shouldn't have a problem finding. You can import XML files into it as well, but you will need the DTD file to stay where ever you house your XML files for referene. Hope this helps out a bit.

Go have a look at the products at http://www.emsoftware.com/products - they have a range of software that could be of interest. How much you invest should depend on how large and complex this is, and how often you'll do the same sort of thing. (There are other XTensions in this market niche too, but I've used XData a little and they have several tiers, which is nice.)

Personally, I do most work of this sort by direct insertion of XPress Tags and find/changes of the text . You can insert columns on either side of your data fields, and fill them in with start and end tags for the appropriate XPress style range (paragraph or character styles).

Export as tabbed text and do the clean up needed (always in BBEdit (http://www.barebones.com) here), then import into XPress. In fact (in one more plug for a company that doesn't know me from Adam) the XTags product Em has can fit well as an enhancement to this approach, as it provides a superset of the XPress Tags codes that can import graphics and do other neat things.

    Best of luck,

    John
