Importing XML from CMS system into "templates"

I have not used QuarkXPress (or any of Quark's enterprise products) in many many years, so please forgive my (potential) use of non-standard terminology or lack of understanding around current features/capabilities...

    Questions:

    1. I would like to know if there is a way to take XML (published by a content management system), apply it to a layout "template" (designed in QuarkXPress) and then output to a PDF?

    2. If so, does this have to be done manually or are their Quark products that can automate this who process?

    Thanks!

I also would like to know how to do something similar. I'm writing a custom CMS... and would love to be able to simply have items flowed onto the page. Buttons on a toolbar would be fantastic... however, I would be satisfied with an import wizard of some sort.

I suspect that this will have to be done with Xtensions... but I too am an old-school quark guy (circa 1997/1998) and I'm not sure what is around/possible now.

Would love to hear from somebody who is "in the know"... can somebody help us out?

    Hello,

The short answer is yes it can. But you may need to modify the XML to make it Quark-friendly.

Assuming you have current regstrations you can contact customer service, sending them a sample of your XML for their input. The other listers may be willing to look at your XML and advise you how to proceed.

There are a number of XTensions available as well .

Long and the short is that I don't have an XML file just yet. That is the nice part! Stick out tongue However, going with the format that our publication currently uses...
    Box 1 has the headline
    Box 2 has the author's name<break> publication name<break> article

The XML format that I was looking at was something similar to what I have at the end of this. However... As I said... it could be virtually anything. I could do a box xml format... whatever. I am very flexible on this... the key is... I need to be able to drop stuff onto the page quickly and easily.

<p>Several downtown merchants insisted Monday that timing is indeed a problem - not with the meters but with the certification project itself.</p>

<p>"I don't think anyone was expecting meter heads being taken out (of operation) for weeks on end," Leach said. "Why is it taking so long?" </p>
