Sudden massive color shift when going to the printer

I'm using Quark 6.5, Photoshop CS2 and a calibrated Apple flat screen monitor. I've been using this same print shop for many, many years for 4 color work. PageMaker back in the day, then Quark. The proofs on a recent 12 page brochure I created came back brownish and the darks were very plugged.

It was a global problem, not a problem isolated to certain images.

The printer has been trying to solve the problem on his end and has said that he's changed nothing in his workflow (and neither have I). He tried printing with and without my Quark settings and profiles and nothing changed.

Surprisingly, on this brochure the images on my screen look nearly identical in Photoshop as they do in Quark. But the printer said they print differently. The images print OK out of Photoshop but not out of Quark.

The only way he could fix the problem was to convert the entire brochure to InDesign. Then it printed OK.

Normally, images look like crap in Quark but print OK. Any time I get worried about how they look, I just open them back up in Photoshop. If they look fine there, I know they'll print fine. This time for some reason, they look good in Quark but print like crap.

Quark CMS color management is active. The image profile in Quark is set the same as in Photoshop.

Does anyone have ideas of how we can solve this? I'm not sure I want to switch to InDesign in order to fix it, maybe there's another solution?
