    Upgrading 4.0 to 4.01+

I have a personal copy of QXP 4.0 (windows) I've owned for 4 years; for some reason I can no longer upgrade it to 4.0+ - each attempt gives me an unrecognized version error? Any ideas? All I want is to make it more stable; it likes to crash (both in XP and 2000). All I do with it anymore is create CD labels and inserts, but I'd still like it reliable. Yet I'm not overly concerned, as I also use InDesign CS.

    TIA for any advice...
    Dave

To update from QuarkXPress 4.0x to 4.1, download the updater from the following link.

    http://www.quark.com/service/desktop/downloads/details.jsp?idx=314

Once that is done you can update 4.1 to 4.11. The link for the updater is

    http://www.quark.com/service/desktop/downloads/details.jsp?idx=420

These are only for US English versions.

    Upgrading 4.0 to 4.01+

Streak, I've tried every updater from 4.01 on; none of them work. That was the whole point of asking for help! I don't understand why I can't upgrade anymore. Once upon a time, I was current at 4.11, but I'm stuck at 4.0 now.

    thanks,
    Dave

I'm getting the same error when I try to upgrade from 4.0 to 4.1. I'm running Windows 2000 - would this be a problem? If so, how do I get around it? I really need to upgrade to 4.1 - I've got a plug-in that needs 4.1 to work...

    Thanks in advance,

Have you tried uninstalling it from the Control Panel - Add Remove Programs. and then installing again and try the updater. and one more thing while installing it do not change the path of the folder, let it install on the default location. if this doesent work install it on another machine and update it. then copy the folder over to the machine you want it on. this should work.

    Thanks for the response rbrown!

I tried uninstalling from the control panel and not changing the path of the folder - no luck with either of those methods. I don't have another computer that I can install Quark on :(

I keep getting concerned when I see that the upgrade is intended for 95/98/NT - do you think this could be the issue, since I'm using Windows 2000?

I'm at a loss... any other ideas?

    Thanks again,

Sorry that did'nt work. Well the problem you are facing may be due to the registry entry of quarkxpress 4.0 in the system registry. You can try cleaning the registry after uninstalling qxp 4.0. and then installing it again and then try updating. this time do not launch qxp 4.0 before updating.

Thanks again for the quick response!

I didn't run Quark before trying to update, but the installer did run an automatic registration - I'll try stopping it from doing that.

In the mean time, how do I clean my registry of the Quark info after removing the program?

    Thanks much,

Well. after uninstalling qxp 4.0, go to run and type regedit, that should open the system registry in front of you. then remove anything that says Quark in the registry. in some places it is under the software catagory. after you have done that, reinstall qxp 4 and update it without launching it.

    i hope this helps

    Well, we tried.

I uninstalled using the control panel. Once uninstalled, I used regedit to remove all mentions of Quark from the registry (there were two). I then installed Quark, stopping the process before registration. The program was still installed, so I ran the updater. It found the file OK (like it always does) but then I got the same error: "File version unrecognized. Skipping update."

Can you think of anything else I can try?

    Thanks for everything,

I am sorry, i do not have any other solution. i would suggest ask some one if they allow you to install it on there machine and burn it on a cd and copy it on your machine. that seems to be the last resort to me. :(

Make sure that you haven't changed the name of the XPress application. I believe v4.X had a ™ in the name, on Macs; I don't know if this is true in Windows. If the name is not the "default" name that was on teh app when it was installed, change it back...

    peace,
    Linda :)
