    Major Font Problem

 I'm running a G4, System 10.2. I happily upgraded to QX6 recently but my happiness was shortlived. I soon noticed a font problem when using Helvetica. I work with ads, mostly built in QX5, that are archived and then changed for re-publication. When I open an old ad I notice the copyright symbol that apears on each ad has been changed to a cap O with umlaut. Thinking that my version of Suitcase might be the problem I upgraded that, too, and found the problem persists. I tried downloading a demo version of QX6 thinking maybe my program was corrupted somehow and a new one would work. Well, that didn't work either! With the demo version of QX6 the cap O with umlaut is only a cap O—no umlaut. At least I'm dealing with English now, but I still have no copyright symbol. Helvetica is not the only font this happens with and the copyright symbol is not the only changed character. Does anyone have a solution? This is beginning to be a major pain as I've spent a lot of money on my QX6 I'm not able to use it.

    Thanks, Ritchy

there is a bunch of base fonts in the dfont format in the /System/Library/Fonts/ directory, best replace Times/Helvetica/Symbol/Courier & Zapf Dingbats dfonts with their postscript equivalents both printer & screen formats.

OSX will ask you to authenticate to do this. This directory acts similar to OS9 System Folder/Fonts, leave the other dfonts alone as the OS uses these.

I have seen this advice given a few times and wonder about it. The system/fonts folder is the last place any application will look for a font. OSX handles fonts a lot different from the old OS's. It first looks in User/Library/fonts if a font is not found then it's on to the library/fonts folder if the needed font is still missing it looks in the system/library/fonts folder. The only way Quark or any application will use a dfont is if you select it when you build the document. As you can see because the way fonts are handled in OSX you can have a dfont and a TT and a TI all active without a problem as long as they are not in the same font/folder. BTW dfonts have never given my imagesetter any trouble, they all rip just fine as all they are is True Type with out a resource fork. The only fonts I have had trouble with in OSX were T1.

I'm not sure about this. It has been my experience that even if you build a document with a Type 1 version of Helvetica, XPress will substitute the .dfont if the Type 1 font is not open next time the doc is opened (since the .dfont is "on" by default).

I get around it all by using FontReserve to manage my System fonts. Too bad it's going the way of the dodo and the passenger pigeon.
