    Outline Type in Quark?

I believe Quark used to be able to convert type to outline. I never did it but I do have a situation now where I need to extend type for bleed. Can you still do it and if so how? I can't find it anywhere. I can do it in Illustrator but thought this time, Quark would be the easier to get accurate placement. I am working in Quark 6.5 but even in Quark 7, my preview was fuzzy with Hi res preview turned on.

I do manage quite a few extensions but really thought it was part of Quark itself but am not absolutely certain.

    Thanks

In QuarkXPress, it's called "Text to Box." It's in the Style menu. Select your type first.

Since you have recalled that XPress can do this, also remember that it DOESN'T do it well, especially on thin fonts. At least not like Illustrator will do it.

BTW, Gluon has an XT called Outlines XT. It's free and you can find it here: http://gluon.com/free.html

Gluon's XT will let you convert more than one line of type at a time. XPress only allows one line.

    Hope that helps.

Sorry that it only works with QXPress 6.0.

Gluon is now offering a QXPress 7.0 compatible ProPack for $199 that includes the OUTLINER XTension, but not as a standalone XTension.

Too bad, I was hoping not to have to spend alot for it. :(

P.S. When will Quark make "Text to Outline" capability standard?

It's been "standard" since at least XPress 4.x, if not earlier.

Select a line of copy, go to the Style menu and click Text to Box.

All Gluon's XT does is allow you to do more than one line of type and to choose whether or not you want to delete the original text box.

QXPress can ONLY outline ONE line of text (I have used QXPress since v.2) for quite some time. However, converting ALL text to outlines on one page is a painstaking process better left to those with a lot of time on their hands. It is a much to cumbersome process that renders the ensuing viewable page a mess.

Just wish ALL text on a Page could be outlined in one step and the page not lose its viewable look.

I agree. And even if you have all that time and convert everything, if you are using a thin font, it's going to look bad. InDesign does this (and a much better job too) just like Illustrator, but not XPress.

    Outline Type in Quark?

    Couldn't agree with you more!

Quark should look into making a standard feature: "Create Text Outlines" when everything is selected on one whole page - not just one line of text in a box. If one didn't want to outline all text, fine but for those that do, I think it would be a very welcome feature indeed!

Actually, in Quark 8.5, you can convert at one time a whole section of text. -Select text with text tool. -Item. -Convert Text to Boxes. -Convert entire box. -It works great with menu-formatted italicized type, but will not maintain the bold feature of menu- formatted bolded type. :(

    Re: Outline Type in Quark?

Thanks! - I've recently returned to using Quark after not using it for a very long time, and I forgot how to do this. Searching for the answer in Quark's Help was no help at all. So I came here to the forums. - Thanks again...
