    Zapf Dingbat problems with Leopard

As you are updating a 6.52 job in OS/X, using a TrueType, dFont (which is a TrueType format) or OpenType font of Zapf Dingbats will not work.

OS/X relies on the Unicode tables in the TrueType font, and ZDings has a very unique Unicode table. Quark 6.5 cannot interpret this coding.

You will have to get a Type1 version of ZDings, remove all other flavors of ZDings from your system, clean the system font cache then activate the Type1 ZDings. Keep everything crossed and it should work.

    Zapf Dingbat problems with Leopard

Thanks, Malcolm, but now I'm even more confused. The Zapf Dingbats font that I am trying to use is a PostScript, Type 1 font (ITC Dingbats, Adobe cut) . I have already cleared the True Type and the .dfont that was in the system, but the font still does not show.

Have you cleared your System font cache?

Does the font show up on any other program on your Mac?

    Zapf Dingbat problems with Leopard

    Hello, again, Malcolm,
Yes, I cleared the cache, and yes, the font shows in Word and PhotoShop. It seems only to be a Quark problem.
This from the tech support online:
    "jack:
Also, as we are using QuarkXPress 6.52 on 10.5.2, I would like to inform you that it is not officially tested nor compatible." and,
    "jack:
Do we get that font in text edit?
    Sara:
No, weird. It reverts to Lucida Grande
    jack:
also , in text edit we get the same output.
    Sara:
But it works fine in Word
    Sara:
    ■◆❖"
    jack:
Sara, we tried at our end as well and that font does not appear in QuarkXPress 6.
    jack:
    It appears in QuarkXPress 7.
    jack:
I would suggest you to download evaluation and try.
And then Jack told me that the only way to go is to download the evaluation copy of 7.3
    I have given up!

    :D
The problem lies in the way QXP is unable to handle the Fontlayout Unicode which was already in the font. In QXP 7 it is solved. But many designers refuse to upgrade to 7.0 because they design every new job in InDesing. QXP is only used to handle their past work. And in CS3 everything is handled well.
    So I decided to rearrange the keyboard-layout in the font itself as OS 9 would handle Zapf Dingbats. Then I generated a new font with the same name (Postscript type 1) and re-installed it on my system. Now both CS3 and QXP 6.52 handle my jobs correctly. I can send you the altered ZapfDinbats. Just give me your emailaddress. Try it yourself and see how it works just fine again. Greetings from the Netherlands (where i Work)and Germany (Where I live);

So, if we were to use your special font MacFan55, would we then be able to submit the file to the printers and have no problems there either? Thanks again for your support everyone!

In a bizarre twist, zapf dingbats renders fine on screen *IF* I set the horizontal scaling to 80% - how bizarre is that !

I have written a mail to you for macfan55@gmail.com to mail me the ZapfDingbats font family that is supportive in Quark 6.5 under MAC OS 10.5.

    Please do the needful

when you make up press ads, most major newspapers require type 1 fonts
