None, i let the OS and Quark manage the fonts. Supposedly, with Snow Leopard, this is recommended, but who knows.

Eric, font book is the default app to manage them in Snow Leopard.

OK, I disabled the fonts, and then opened it and it worked. Now of the 1500 fonts I have, how do isolate it, with legitimacy. In other words, with a font app I can trust.

Yeah. I was thinking as much. Apple will tell you that FontBook is great and it has improved over the years, but it's still not in the same leaguee as Suitcase or other commercial font managers. See this thread.

In FontBook preferences you want to turn off Automatic Font Activation and Alert Me If System Fonts Change. But before you do this, make sure you have deactivated all fonts (all that FontBook will let you deactivate anyway).

There is also a way to "reset" FontBook. Do a Google search for that if you want to try it. I'm really just not familiar with FontBook as I avoid the dang thing like a double plague.

Eric, I went through the validation process using FontBook and dumped all the bad fonts. Tried to open my file again and it quit. What is left in fonts is 903 with minor problems and 654 that passed. FontBook does not have a process for me to disable the fonts with a flagged warning. Should I download Suitcase? What do you think? Thanks!

    Re: Quark unexpectedly quits

Downloading and installing Suitcase won't solve the problem, although a long-term look at investing in a font manager might be a good idea.

I'd move on and try my other suggestions. It may not  be a font issue.

    Re: Quark unexpectedly quits

Eric, when I disabled the fonts, the file opened. When I re-enabled the fonts, the file quit when trying to open. I did pull the Xtensions to the desktop and the application quit again. Here is the first lines of the error. As you can see, there are many references to fonts. But personally, I don't see it pointing to one font. I am thinking of downloading FontExplorer X for Mac. It seems to get high marks. I would hope it would allow me to more easily and intuitively manage and disable flagged fonts. Additional thoughts? Re: Quark unexpectedly quits

Well, then it is a font issue. You just need to find out which font is the problem. Disable all the fonts. Re-enable some and try and open the document. Keep doing this until you run down the font that is corrupt (or not working). Once you find it, disable it, open your document and change the copy used by that font to a different font.

FontExplorer is a good font manager. Glenn McDowell knows more about it then I do (he's actually used it). In any case, no font manager no matter how good will open a document with a corrupt font. So, you're going to need to find the bad one yourself.

Once it's all sorted out I'd do some research on font management. It's best to have a good plan and organize everything when you start off with a new font manager.

    Re: Quark unexpectedly quits

Thank you Eric, I downloaded Font Explorer, ran it and cleaned the caches, did some other conflict management and the document did open - now the issue is resolving all the missing fonts and mapping them to new fonts. Whew!! I will continue to read about this whole font management issue also. I owe you. Much appreciated!!

    Re: Quark unexpectedly quits

You're welcome! Glad I could help out. Font management issues are a bit**! The only "good" thing about those issues is that they tend to be the most common and therefore have some established troubleshooting rules. Good luck to you!
