    Oups! I did it again...

Admitingly, I am a Style Sheet freak. 99.9% of every text I lay out in my books has a style of their own that also include variation on a theme.

Ex.: Body Text ->Helvetica 9 pts
Body Text bold -> Body Text + font Helvetica Bold
Body text Italic -> Body text + font Helvetica Italic.
    etc.

What I would like to be able to do is to map the different "local styles" (P, B, I, U, W, etc.) to actual character style sheets.

Thatw ay we could easily import text from word containing bold, italics, etc, and quickly get them to their proper style sheet.

By the same token, because I use so many style sheets, I would like a way to present them differently in the Style Sheet palette (and drop down menu) by being able to create groups (or have the afore mentioned "flavors" of any given styel appear in a subgroup. The same could be done with the color palette (and drop down menu).

    Thank you!

I agree grouping would help, possibly with the option to colourcode them.

However I've been getting around this for years by putting a letter at the beginning of my style sheets to help organize them, that way at least they show up in my palette in clusters. I choose a descriptive letter for that section or category, whatever makes sense...

    It works pretty well.

I work the same way as well. 8)
Michel, haven't you noticed that Body Text, Body Text Bold and Body Text italic are gathered in the palette?
This said I support you 200% in your suggestion. Also the color coding, tagging or whatever would help. Go on guys!

Well, since (doh!) most of my project are scripted, I have been using a naming scheme that more or less does the same thing.
In short, all my styles name beging with the letter coresponding to the Master page they apply to:
    Example:
    Master Pages
    O-Opening
    I-Introduction
    C-Conclusion
    ...

Then my style sheets could be named:
    O-Body Text
    O-Body Text B
    O-Body Text BI
    O-Body Text I
    C-Title 1
    C-Title 2
    IC-Body Text
    IC-Body Text B
    IC-Body Text BI
    I-Title 1
    I-Title 2
    ...

So yes I realized that my styles were bunched together but considering that I often work with documents averaging 10 to 15 Master Pages you can see that this list can get quite long, hence the need for somekind of grouping.
