    Forum Migration Status and Issues

    Greetings All,

If you are reading this you can see we have unleashed new forums software.  I hope you can all agree it is much better than the old board software.  However, as with anything of this scope there are a few issues we have to work through.  We would like to outline a few things.

    1.  All data available was brought over.  You may notice your posts counts are lower.  This is due to the data loss that occurred early last year, so now the post counts have been adjusted based on physical data presence.
    2. There is a embedded editor for making posts that enables some nice formatting options.  The currently does not work under Safari.  If you desire this functionality please use FireFox until a fix becomes available.

Please post issues here so we can better keep track.

Thanks for your help and support!

Too much vertical space between the Posts titles. There should be nothing below each Post titles, for easy reading; move that "Last Post by..." from underneath the Post titles.

Board icons does not seem to follow actual content status. I just received an email about a reply made to a thread I am watching but the Forum Icon still states that "no unread post" is present (after refreshing the whole thing). However, if I view the forum itself, sure enough I see my watched thread with a red flag on it.

It seems to me the icon actually refers to "seen thread" and "unseen thread", could I be right?

I will leave that one up for debate but I ratherliked the fact thta in the old forum you would get an email notification ONLY for the first unread post in a thread.

In this one, not only do I get notified for EVERY new posts that comes in, I also get notified about my own posts.

This problem seems to no longer exists. Don't if you had anything to do with this (if so, thank you) or if my browser was operating in a alterante universe. In any case, this is no longer an issue.

Re: Forum Migration Status and Issues

Why go for commercial, and therefore charged for, BB software when there are a fair few damn good free (OpenSource) solutions out there that work on every platform? In this particular industry, more than almost any other, there will be more Mac users than PCs. Yet the board software you've gone with doesn't support the main Mac browser properly!

Frankly I think the board looks nicer and, potentially, will be better, but at the moment it's not. Please add a 'view posts since last visit' link rather than the 'unread posts' link as you have it and please, please find some way to identify which forum area each of those new posts comes from. Emma pointed this out in a different thread and it's a bit of a nuisance if you're a 'fast in fast out' kind of board user who really only wants to go to posts asking for help within the specific areas of their knowledge - I, for instance, won't touch the web stuff (apart from generalised comments) as I don't know enough about Quark and its web features.

Good luck. Like I said, mostly better, but still needs a bit of help! Miles better than Adobe's though, thankfully!

Hi, I currently am unable to connect again to the forums. I just created a new fake account to reply here but my former Unser name and Password just don't get through. Please can you tell what's up? Jean-Marie Schwartz

Ahhh! Finally my request to filter people form Belgium has at last been implemented! Stick out tongue

All kiddy aside, I can see why Quark deciede to go for a proprietary solution. I had the same debate with the powers that be here.

    - What does "Open Source" means?

    - Does that mean we will be more prone to attacks by 3rd party individuals?

    - I mean if everybody has access to the source code...

We have to remember the fiasco we had not so long ago with the sapm and everything. Ibet they do not want to have it happen again.

That said, I anm not saying theyr were right or wrong about their choice. It's just a case of having faith in your software and apparently they decided that "FREE" could not mean "GOOD" (Well that policy has been implemented at Quark a long time ago,,, Well by the SALES department anyhow)

Of course proprietary software means the source code is not vailable to the masses but it laso means a more limited pool of people able to fix it if it does get broken into. I mean most OSes are proprietary and they have ALL been hacked into. The software vendor simply try to keep up with the fixes as mainpower allows.

Open source on the other hand. does offer hackers-to-be with an easier way to hack into your system but the good (people) far exceed the bad.

Ah! So it is you, Michel! I get it...

Pfff! This new forum is not as easy to use as the previous one. Hard to put yellow faces anywhere in the text. Tags are not that easy to add. Well this only my second post. Sure a couple more will get me a master.

This said, back to the Webmaster, if you can fix my issue I'd be very glad. Thanks in advance!

Re: Forum Migration Status and Issues

Thanks for all your input, I encourage all of you to continue to give the type of positive feedback that we can action.

It appears that some of you like myself not only frequent but also administer and moderate on other forums.  As you know it is easy to find differences between forum solutions including different problems with migrations or features etc..  Please continue to work with us to make our Quark forums better, knowing that it is a process and will take time.

Again, keep the suggestions coming, we are compiling all of them and will action the ones that we can as resources permit.  I am sure you can all understand the effort it takes to migrate a system and deal with all the ongoing issues.

I want to address a couple specific items that some of you have brought up.  In regards to the solution we selected; it had a lot do with the overall direction of all our web services and finding one that we could that matched our global architecture.  The plan is to have similar web systems and solutions globally, you can see some of the changes and new sites at dynamicpublishing.quark.com or 8.quark.com, (yes these are links and the style needs to be fixed), and soon you will see a new desktop site all of which are run on completly new architecture.  Yes it is backed up Wink.  Ultimately it makes it more efficient for us to support, which in the long run is better for the user.

Regarding Safari; I am a MAC user at work and home and I often find issues with Safari.  We have filed a defect with our vendor on this issue already.  Having worked in the web industry a long time this is not an unusual case and I know why it happens, it you would like to discuss those issues feel free to contact me if you want to chat about it.  It was not a case of not testing but we did have to make a decision on it, so we moved forward.

Finally let me say the conversion of the old data was not easy, it took much longer than we had hoped for many reasons, and if I was you I would probably say “so what”.  But the old server and systems that the forums were running on were getting pretty old, did not run well and took a lot of time to keep alive.  I believe we were running a pre-2.0 version of phpBB and it didn’t fit our Global Web and Security strategy. We understand it has created some issues and we will continue to work towards solutions for the things that give you pain.

Again that’s for the input, we want to work all issues, its going to take time like anything new. Keep the suggestions coming.

Oh, one minor issue: The Fav.ico should really be the Quark logo rathr than the Community server one

Well this morning I was both able to view the posts that I had set to treaded view and switch them to flat without any loop errors and the RSS was working too. So thank you.
