QuarkXPress 6.0 Installing Fonts - Mac 10.5 OS

I am new to using Quark and I am trying to figure out how to install additional fonts. I am working in QuarkXPress 6.0 on a Mac Mini 10.5 OS. The only font management software on the Mac is Font Book.

    1) Do I have to install some other font management software in order to install new fonts?

I also have Indesign on the Mac.

    2) How do I make the fonts avaialble to me in ID also available in Quark.

    All help is greatly appreciated!!!!!

You can put fonts directly into HD>Library>Fonts or in HD>Users>Your_User>Library>Fonts and they will be available to all programs. If you want to use a font management program, you can activate fonts only when you need them, and deactivate them when you are done. That will keep your computer running a little faster. Linotype FontExplorerX is free, or you could buy Suitcase or one of the other ones. Here's a link to Linotype:

Also, Quark 6.0 was the first release of version 6, and like most programs, there were errors that needed to be fixed. You should update to 6.52. Its free, and fixes many errors that you may encounter if you stay with 6.0.

You should also be aware, though you may already know this, that whilst 6.52 fixes a lot of problems with v6 it is not compatible with OS 10.5. You will experience other problems, sorry.

Only v7.31 is OS 10.5 ready. I'd recommend downgrading the OS if you can't upgrade Quark.

    Good luck,

    Greg

Yeah, and what are people who have to use Quark 6.52 and who need to replace a machine when Apple is selling only 10.5? Quark should take care of its existing customers by patching Quark 6.5 so that it's compatible w/ 10.5 before bothering about any new versions. William

Wow. Patch a program released in 2003 when Jaguar (10.2) was the norm. Hey Quark! Make XPress 4.11 run native on Leopard! You guys should patch it so it works! I'm waiting!

…what are people who have to use Quark 6.52…

My Macbook Pro (running 10.4.11) is around a year old now, so I don't know if Apple has rigged new computers so that they won't run in 10.4 or not, but a quick check over at Amazon shows that copies of 10.4 are still available. You would have to check on this next point, but Parallels gives you the ability to run Windows and Mac OS at the same time, so maybe you can run 10.5 and 10.4 that way too. Not exactly what you want, but if you have to use 6.52, this could be a way to make it work.

You can also find a used G4 or G5 on the cheap ($200 on Craigslist). Some people who have to use PageMaker in OS9 have been doing that.
