    PPD PITA

After my new install of the Quark8 upgrade, I've just spent 10+ minutes turning off what seemed like hundreds of PPDs for printers that I don't have. Isn't there an easier way to do this? Perhaps have all of these PPDs start OFF, and then activate the ones that you want. OK, OK, I know: someone is not going to know how to get their printer turned on, and declare the application a piece of s**t. OK, how about this: a "Select All" checkbox, where you can turn them all OFF with one quick click, and then go in and turn ON the printers you own. Surely that is better than the way it is now?

    Re: PPD PITA

I requested the exact same thing back in q6. Again, not important enough as far as quark is concerned to be fixed. Who cares what the customer's needs/wants are. I firmly believe that THAT is the company corporate policy/strategy.

Command-clicking one of the checkboxes selects/deselects all PPDs in 7.31.

ampeg: Thanks for the tip — I would have loved to know that last Friday night! I suppose I should have tried a few key combinations on my own . . . Mark

I've done the exact same thing - selecting a gazillion printers individually - till I saw that tip here a coupla months ago. So I feel your pain...I don't recall ever having seen that key command anywhere in the official documentation, you'd think they'd mention it, what a huge time saver (or time waster if you don't know about it).

Did they remove the option to select a folder of just the PPD's that you do use? Use Auxiliary Folder…

lars: Yeah, they still have the Aux Folder option . . . perhaps I should have just used that instead. Once I got started, I thought "I might as well stick to it . . . " Woulda, shoulda, coulda . . . Mark

With preference files corrupting so often, once I have built a set I create archive of the folder as back-up. I always create my pref's folder within the app folder, I also create a PPD folder within the app folder too. This can save valuable time when things get damaged. Loading the Aux can be much quicker in the long run.

Make a copy of your preference file when all is well. If prefs get corrupted in future, copy the archived file back in after quitting quark. Lots faster that deleting, and then re-building prefs.

Yes there is an easier way to remove the PPD's that come preloaded on your operating system that you are not using.  You can remove them directly from the folder where they are stored.

On a Macintosh go to HD > Library > Printers > PPD's > Contents > Resources > en.lproj folder.   Open this folder and move the PPD’s you don’t want to see in QuarkXPress.  Rather than deleting them, I would create another folder and move them out of the folder en.lprof to your new folder for future reference.
