I'm trying out the test drive version of Quark 8 and can't seem to find the placeholder window for XML files. With vrs. 7 you needed to download an Xtension, is this going to be the same for vrs. 8? Please can someone help? TIA.

Quark has now released 8.01, but is there any news on XML usage in version 8?

I notice on the knowledge base it mentions XML and version 8, stating:

"More Information: QuarkXPress 8 can import XML into a template that has been set up with placeholders."

But this isn't strictly true, is it?

Also when you look for the Placholder option in the Window menu list you still get Welcome Screen where placholder should be.

Please what's going on?

I've spent an hour to find what is the placeholder. Help doesn't contain any information. By searching on the Internet, I finally learned what it should be, and wondering why no XML XTensions are installed. Will they be included in the future XPress update? Or should we buy them separately? Tim, or some other person, please mention the latest situation about XML XTensions ASAP.

How soon is the near future now? As we heavily rely on this feature, this issue has become a stumbling block to upgrade our 5 copies of Q 7.5 to Q 8. Indeed it will prevent us from adding more copies as we expand. Help.

So it is looking like has quark abandoned XML in version 8, yes? I just downloaded the trial version of 8 and it doesn't seem that there is any XML support at all.

Should I come back and try again when they release version 9, or is this a permanent change?

After much digging around and some frankly useless replies from Quark Customer Services along the lines of "it'll be ready when it's ready", I got this prompt reply from Tim Banister, General Manager, Desktop Technology "Good day - Our XML Import for our version 8 software and will be available within 60 days. Thanks" within a few hours of me mailing him. This was on the 12th June so I'm waiting with bated breath until mid-September, at which point I will probably make the decision whether or not we should finally make the jump to inDesign if Tim doesn't make good on his promise.

Well, well, well. Ahead of schedule, Quark have included the XML placeholders in the 8.1 update and also sent me a nice message to inform me of this. Good customer service from Quark? Surely not! Whatever has caused it, I'm happy to see all this progress - as a devoted Quark user, I was beginning to feel battered by all the InDesign brouhaha and bluster. Happy days.

What does it mean when the placeholder entries are underlined? when happens?

where do you see the underlining please? In the layout? If yes, then that just means you formatted the placeholders, so data flowing in will also be underlined.

You can style placeholders like normal text (color, type face, local formatting, style sheets etc.) and when the data replaces the placeholder, it takes over the formatting ofit.

I see the underlining in placeholders window, in placeholder section (at the left of structure). This underlining appear few times and when it appears, when i click "merge data" xpress crashes
