    Quark 7 > 8 File Compatibility

Hi Everyone, Just wanted to ask as I can't seem to find the answer ANYWHERE!! - Can you open a Quark 7 file with Quark 8? Is there backward compatibility? Thanks Ryan

Yes of course - just double-click a Quark 7 file and it should open in v8. If it doesn't, launch v8 and open the v7 file via the File menu.

You cannot open a Quark 8 file in version 7 though. You must first open it in v8 and File menu -> Export it back to a v7 file.

Yeah, it goes back to Quark 4 even, we sometimes open such files with 7. The demo version of 8 opens it too.

How do you export it back to version 7, unless you mean as a postscript or pdf file??? Be careful, if you opt not to buy Q8 you cannot reopen the file as such in Q7. Moreover, if you copy /paste the contents, from 8 to 7 with both versions open, all soft return formatting is gone, changed to hard returns. You cannot send a Q8 file to a server unless he also has Q8 and cannot not be modified on Q7 since it canot be reopened in Q7 . There should be a save as Q-7, Q-6 option such as SAVE AS options in many other programs such a MS Word etc.
Have used Quark for business since version 1.5

You can "downsave" from 8 to 7 by going under File to Export then Layout as Project.  Once there, choose version 7.

    Re: Quark 7 > 8 File Compatibility

I am about to purchase Quark 8 and have to deal with older files created 8+ years ago in Quark 4.04. You think I will be able to open these files? Anything I should be aware of?

    Thanks,

    Marion

    Re: Quark 7 > 8 File Compatibility

    Hi, Marion,

yes, QuarkXPress 8 will open ANY version of documents back to QuarkXPress 3.1.

So also documents of versions 4, 5, 6, and 7, regardless whether they are multi-lingual, single-lingual or even East Asian.

Fonts are definitely something to be aware of, as you might have used fonts from the 1990's, which COULD cause issues under modern Operating Systems (and then also with QuarkXPress). That said, your fonts might also work fine.

Printer drivers is another area, as you are probably not only upgrading your QuarkXPress, but also the OS.

And if you are using a required XTension in your current version of QuarkXPress, then check first whether it is also available for 8.

Maybe best to try QuarkXPress 8 yourself, the Test Drive of 8 is fully functional for 60 days and you can try EVERYTHING.
You even get FULL support during the 60-days test: http://support.quark.com (call us, chat with us, email us).

    Best
