Things I'd like to see in Quark

Master pages - The ability to append from one document to the next. Spell check - turn off suspect capitalization & punctuation (7) and/or be able to add these items to Aux dictionary Also be able to go forward or backward in spell check or pause and fix items manually and continue spell check. Colors - show where a color is used.

A way to export live transparency. Postscript is DEAD Quark, in case you haven't heard.

Hi, In addition to the points brought up by others on this thread, we'd also like to see you incorporate a "Check for Updates" menu item like every single other piece of software in the world. We shouldn't have to go hunting for updates on your website and then have to enter account names and passwords in order to get them. It's ridiculous to make us do this. Again, we paid (a lot!) for your software so please do us the favor of at least allowing us to automatically check for updates without having to waste time looking around on your website and constantly entering yet more information. It's annoying. I've been using QuarkXpress since the early 90's and I've always found them incredibly slow to incorporate features that their users are VERY vocal about wanting. There are several instances in this forum alone that have been brought up time and time again and the good people at Quark either don't read their own forums or don't care. We pay good money for your software and you claim to be the industry leader, so start acting like it.

    Two major things for me...

    1. make the effects that Quark have placed in the software actually work!!! the most frustrating thing in the world when your trying to get a piece ready for print - is to be messing around taking away shadows and removing colour blends because you keep getting nasty white lines all over the place.

    2. SPEED THE PDF PROCESS UP!!!! I'm sick of spending half my day starring at the progress bar why oh why is it so slow Quark????

I'm certain that the people that develop this software don't actually use it, because if they did this would piss them off as much as it does me

Re: Quick way to pick colors using Quark

Umm, I seem to have good luck setting colors with no document open, start to set your preferences for Style sheets, Colors, Dashes and stripes, even set your Tool defaults (i.e. I like .5 point rules for the default, not 1 point, so I set that in my <Tools> preference).

Once you have your sttings as desired, Quit Quark, then ZIP your preferences folder (in case you have to trash it, there's a backup of what you just did).

Then, for every New Document you start, the Colors, etc. are all there, no appending required....

Re: Quick way to pick colors using Quark

Great suggestion! I did it and it seemed to work. At the beginning I thought all the settings had to be set under Preferences>tools but then once I did not find anything for stylesheets and colors there I simply went to edit my default colors (edit>colors>new) and did the same for the style sheets (edit>style sheets>new or append if you want to take it from another document)

    Thanks David!

Re: Things YOU'D Like to See in QuarkXpress

Hi a way around this would be to :

    1. create a quark Library drag and drop the colours in to the library and then every time you make a new qxd file you can drag them out of the library an they will link up with your new file, and save.

    or

    2. create a quark temp file with the colours in and each time you want those colours launch that qxd temp file, and save.

Lastly you can amend your quark colour library, launch quark, but have no files open, them go in to edit colours add the colours you use all the time, save. And from now on every time you launch quark these colours will be there.

Re: Things YOU'D Like to See in QuarkXpress

I would like QuarkXPress to be able to generate a pdf without going through postscript (live transparency). This is essential. Either have transparency and support it, or don't have it. No more flattening…it causes WAY too many issues.I often get files without bleeds, or built the wrong size. If the PDF is flattened, it is extremely difficult to fix.

I would like QuarkXPress to disable the font styling buttons if the appropriate font is not present (no more false bolds, italics). If this can't be done, they should be removed so that XPress users stop thinking they have (and may use) fonts they do not.

I would like QuarkXPress to enable me to preview separations without making a PDF, i.e. click seps on and off to ensure that a file is separating properly.

I would like QuarkXPress to allow me to download PANTONE libraries (from MyPANTONE) and add them to QuarkXPress myself.

I would like QuarkXPress to give me a button to disable all the PPD's in PPD Manager with the click of a button, so that I may then only activate the ones I need. I tried dragging them all into another folder, and XPress put them back! This caused me to have to click them all off, one at a time. Not a good use of my time.

    Thanks.

    Hi, Tim,

you suggest valid points. Please allow me to comment on some.

I believe several people from Quark have already responded to this one.Yes, for certain workflows unflattened transparencies in PDF are important and therefore we are working on it. Remember though that flattening will still be important, some ISO standards like PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 require it even.

    Agreed. Stay tuned, please.

Agreed. Have you tried command-clicking them? That should disable all of them.

If you want to discuss in person, please feel free to send me an email with your contact details and I'll call you.

What would be the point in directing Quark to a duplicate folder of all your PPD's just create a new folder of only the selection of PPD's you require. This is how its been easiest done for more years than I can think of. I have one of these with just my 6 PPD's resident along with my preferences plus a zip of my preferences all in the Quark app folder.

Sorry to hear that. My quark 7.3 makes gigantic pdfs lightning fast using OS 10.4.9. What OS are you using?

Re: Things I'd like to see in Quark

Yes, a pause in spell check is a good idea. I'd like that too. In addition, I'd like for Quark to become Resolution Independent??!!! Prior to Mac Intel/Tiger/Leopard/LCD monitors, when Quark files were set to "Actual Size", that's what they were. Now when set to "Actual Size", they are very, very tiny. On a full schedule, that creates eye strain, plus it's not accurate. Quark said we'd have to keep resetting the zoom to 138% to view files in their true 100% actual size. That's distractive, plus fiddling with inacurate sizes and zooms, slows the creation of certain design elements as well as productivity. This is not Quark's fault, but it would be wonderful if they could step up to being Resolution Independent.

Re: Things YOU'D Like to See in QuarkXpress

I created a library for colours as detailed in Quark help, but when I drag a colour from the colours palette of an open file into the library palette nothing happens!

    What am I doing wrong???
