Shaun, I've always understood that a Library is for elements (ie actual objects) rather than preferences, settings or other definitions of things. So if I want to store colours in Library, rather than specific objects, I just create a no-content box for each colour and drag those in - or a group of boxes like a colour test bar, then drag it into the new doc, then delete it. I don't think you can drag in a colour spec, independent of an object. Although I stand ready to be corrected...!

I'd love to be able to create a single layout with multiple page sizes. Have you ever tried to layout a gatefold or (shudder) a french gatefold in QuarkXPress. When trying to lay a spread ad over 3 pages that are (suppose to be) of different sizes and on different forms, it becomes quite a pain.

A SCALING TOOL, FOR HEAVENS SAKE!!! Or not naming the Layout the same as the document. This just sucks when you only use one layout per document. You get PDFs named "Document123_Document123". It's the year 2009, Mister Quark!!!!!! I hate to say it but even with quark 8 you're not up to ID. Just too many basic things missing or too quirky or too complicated to do. In love Typotobi

Re: Things YOU'D Like to See in QuarkXpress

    Hi, all,

    Tim Schatz:
I would like QuarkXPress to be able to generate a pdf [with live transparency]. This is essential. Either have transparency and support it, or don't have it. No more flattening…it causes WAY too many issues.I often get files without bleeds, or built the wrong size. If the PDF is flattened, it is extremely difficult to fix.

I would like QuarkXPress to disable the font styling buttons if the appropriate font is not present (no more false bolds, italics). If this can't be done, they should be removed so that XPress users stop thinking they have (and may use) fonts they do not.

QuarkXPress 8.1 adds both wishes. The second one is slightly different than you wish, the buttons do not get disabled but display a warning (also in Usage for the whole document).

    DesignPress:
    Two major things for me...

    1. make the effects that Quark have placed in the software actually work!!! the most frustrating thing in the world when your trying to get a piece ready for print - is to be messing around taking away shadows and removing colour blends because you keep getting nasty white lines all over the place.

    2. SPEED THE PDF PROCESS UP!!!! I'm sick of spending half my day starring at the progress bar why oh why is it so slow Quark????

No white lines and faster PDF output are both nice advantages of unflattened PDFs, so QuarkXPress 8.1 shoudl solve that for you. Check with your printer though, as some standards still require flattening (like PDF/X-1a and X3). Of course QuarkXPress 8.1 also still supports flattening.

Yes, a pause in spell check is a good idea.

    Also availabe in QuarkXPress 8.1.

    Typotobi:
A SCALING TOOL, FOR HEAVENS SAKE!!!

    Yes, also in 8.1.

    Enjoy!

Re: Things YOU'D Like to See in QuarkXpress

Hi Matthias Has Quark 8. or 8.1 been made to be "Resolution Independent" yet? A Quark product rep said Quark would soon do that. Prior to using flat panels, Tiger, Leopard, we set Quark pages to "100% or Actual Size" and appeared as "100% or Actual Size". But now when set at "100% or Actual Size", they appear at 62% – too small, inaccurate, and hard on the eyes. Quark rep said until then, to set & reset zoom features to 138% for pages to be "100% or true Actual Size". That means lots of extra steps, slower production, is distractive and eye straining. In addition, PS Images at 100% and images on Quark pages set at 100% do not match. I'd like to upgrade to Quark 8 or 8.1 – but only if Quark has added that Resolution Independent feature first! (now using Quark 7.2., iMac 0S 10.4.9.) Thanks! Victoria

    Hi elpnt,

    elpnt11583:
One I just thought of. Have a preview button that shows the page without bleeds.

Such a feature is available in QuarkXPress 9.1 and even more. You define your view (show invisibles, but clip the page and hide guides) and then you assign that to a shortcut key.

    Thanks

Can I add to that a larger artboard at least as big as indesign for when you're working on big exhibitions

Re: Things YOU'D Like to See in QuarkXpress

I would very much like to see improvements in a few areas. Firstly spellchecking, I find the spellchecking function very clumsy at showing where the suspect word is within the layout, often the palette is over the top of it or it is hidden off the page, this makes it unnecessarily difficult and time consuming to find the word and show it within the context of the layout. I'd suggest finding a way to make it much more apparent. Also, I think there should be a forwards and back function as often you can cycle past a particular suspect word if you've had to manually close the palette to make changes and you're on a second pass. Also, a check box to disable checking items off the pasteboard. I would also favour underlined suspect words as you type. To this end I've been forced to buy AutoCorrectXT but would rather have had this functionality built in and easily switched on/off. As professionals it's really very difficult to defend any spelling errors so any help with this can only be a step in the right direction. Secondly, can you add effective resolution, colour space, spot colour columns into the 'picture usage' palette, as this simple change would mitigate many peoples concerns for a basic flightcheck. Also, I'd suggest an edit button to be able to open the file in it's default application, as it would be faster than showing the item in the layout, closing the palette then double clicking to edit. Lastly, the ability to highlight columns of text and apply a character style, I often work with company report and accounts which often have highlighted columns of text... I know that conditional styles go some way to addressing this but they're not always appropriate. Finally, I have added some items to the wish list for app studio but not sure anyone has looked at that. Thanks, Simon

Re: Things YOU'D Like to See in QuarkXpress

Oh, and another query... Why can you not choose proper RGB colours from 0-255 in the colour palette rather than 0-100%? Its more time consuming to match colours between graphics/other programmes this way. Another of my colleagues has just become very confused by entering RGB values into the palette to find the colour is very different to what was expected... it wasn't immediately obvious to him what was causing the problem. Surely this is a little limiting with the move towards more digital outputs?
