    files not opening

I am news editor for a magazine produced for a small community-based charity.  Two other editors and me submit our stuff to a co-ordinating editor who puts the whole thing together for the printers.

Previously running Quark 5, when my PC had to be rebuilt the original software could not be reloaded.  I wanted to upgrade to Quark 7, the version used by the coordinating editor, but Quark declined to make this version available to charities so we invested in Quark 8.

From my removeable hard disk backup, I downloaded the previous template.  I saved this as a .qpt master.  I used the master to work on the latest magazine issue.  I saved this as a .qxp file.

When I try to open the file or the master, they hang after an apparent 90% load.

Is there a workaround?  Have the files been damaged beyond repair?  Should I try and set up the masters from scratch?  Should I try again with the hard disk backup but follow a different procedure?

You can try appending the layout to a new file.

Just create a new file & goto file menu append, select your old file. In the append dialog select layout> include all then click OK.

Have the file extensions changed in Quark 8? It used to be .qxp for a project and .qxt for a template.

Thanks AD.  I played around and got some other advice.  It seems things improve after going to Win Service Pack 3.

I seem to be back on track - after wasting several hours, of course!

My mistake, Migman. You are quite correct about the file extensions.
