Xpress needs to handle PICT files.

I have used Quark Xpress on a Mac since Version 3.0 and have always been able to copy and paste between an equation editor and my quark document using the PICT format. Up to version 6.x, it has worked fine; it stopped working at version 7 and now 8. I am a math teacher and really rely on being able to do that. To save each equation as an EPS file would be a huge amount of extra work. As is was, I could have a test with perhaps 100 equations or formulas; all in PICT format, and each one able to be copied from the document, pasted into the equation editor, edited, and then copied and pasted right back into the document to make an alternate version of the test. I have to maintain version 6.52 on my machine. One time I was told that it was a problem with the Apple OS, but I don’t see how that could be. I can open a file with 6.52 and it works fine; open the same file with 7.5 or 8.0 and it prints jagged; the pictures won’t copy and paste; totally useless. It has to be that a translator or something has been left out. Thanks for listening.

Do you have photoshop, or other image editing program? If so, after you copy the image from your quuation editor, click on photoshop, choose new file, and paste. Now name and save, and import into quark. That is all you need to do. The method you have been using only gives you lo-resolution (screen resolution) on the pasted images.

No nothing left out. There were several responses to this issue in the General forums when it was first posed. I can recall replying to either your query or to the query of someone who had a similar work flow. 6.52 works for you because it's Carbon. That is, a lot of the code was ported from OS9 to OSX. Since OS9 used PICT as it's base graphic format (API) this still works for you. When Quark wrote XPress 7, they updated the code to Cocoa which is OSX's standard API. What this means to you is that you can't get what you want from XPress 7 and higher in the way you have done it in the past.

It's not an XPress bug. It's not an Apple problem. It's modernization and leaving the old behind. Granted, it throws a major wrench in your workflow. But it isn't something that Quark broke or Apple eliminated. Both companies just chose to move on.
