Colors in .eps files from Illustrator wrong in Quark (specific CMYK values look VERY different)

     Hi everyone,

I'm new to Quark but have worked with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc for quite a while.  I'm putting together a magazine but am running into problems in color between Quark and Adobe Illustrator .eps files.  I've tried using duplicate color profile settings for both programs and manually typing in the exact same CMYK values, but am still getting differing results. If I output to .tiff from Illustrator, things look somewhat close (but not exactly a match as you would expect with the same CMYK values). Unfortunately when I try to save an Illustrator .eps then import that into a quark picture box things go crazy.

In Quark, when I export to a .pdf or print to my inkjet printer, things look closer to what I want (for example, NOT the bright blue below), but still the colors with the exact same CMYK values in Quark and Illustrator .eps files look different? Please see the images below for my Illustrator and Quark color settings and an example of the problem.

Any advice for what I should do or try to fix this? Thank you!

    Hello,

I work for local community college in Chicago area, and we are running into almost same issue.

When an Illustrator .eps has a process color (not PMS) made up of 50% cyan, 80% yellow, 30% Magenta, 10%black (or whatever the make up would be), the exact same percentages in Quark produce a different hue of that same color.  So this cmyk above makes an olive looking green. The Illustrator file placed in Quark 7 has these attributes. This color is the same in Quark. When we look at a color box in Quark and the color from illustrator they are a different hue of olive green on screen and in a high res pdf and in the output proof.

We are currently running OSX 10.4.11, Illustrator CS3 v13.0.2 and QuarkXpress 7.31/7.5 on a Powermac G5.

If anyone have any guidance or insights, I would greatly appreciate it!

    Steve

It sounds like you may have more knowledge of this than me, but while trying to find a solution to my problem in the first post I learned that Quark is not able to color manage .eps files (since the information is encapsulated post script)The example in the pictures in my first post above where the more standard blue (from illustrator) actual appears like a vivid neon blue (in quark) is the result of this problem.  Fortunately, once printed or exported to a .pdf it is not a problem.  Turning on color manage .eps files in the quark color management preferences seemed to also fix the problem, sometimes

However I have also noticed the problem you are talking about, where the colors are close but not exact.  This seems to also be the case between .tiff files (as well as .eps) created in Illustrator or Photoshop Vs. the color applied to a box in Quark.   As far as I can figure it should have something to do with color management, but even when matching the settings between the programs the problem didn't go away.  The quark help file on Color Management is dismal and you would think it should be compatible on default settings anyway....

Anyway, I would also appreciate guidance from someone more knowledgeable. Even website that covers the issue would be very helpful, but my google searches haven't turned up anything useful.

Try following these instructions - I was struggling too until it was explained better ...
    Go to EDIT >COLOR SETUP,
Create a new source Setup: Define source Profiles for RGB and CMYK solid and image colors.
Define a rendering intent for RGB to CMYK conversions. (e.g. the profiles should match your CS3 profiles)
Make sure CMYK to CMYK destinations is NOT checked
Then create a new output color setup: Choose “CMYK” as mode an your desired output profile (e.g. ISO Coated…).
Then switch to QuarkXPress Preferences and then to the color manager for print layouts. Choose the newly created source setup as a preference for all new documents.
Also choose your color output setup as softproofing setting.
Its also a good idea to set LogoSync as prefered CMM and to activate Black point compensation.
After all this steps you are ready to create a new layout und to start designing.
When you are on the way to create your printable PDF (PDF/X, best way is to “export”)
the most important thing is that you choose your color output setup in the colors tab when exporting.
In case you are not doing this all former steps have been worthless!
Then do the same for all your output setups, you can do this under EDIT > OUTPUT STYLES make sure the default PDF,EPS and PRINT styles all are using
the Colour that you created in the output setup earlier, i.e don't use the quark supplied output setups

So in your case you would set up as follows:
Set the Source color setup EDIT > COLOR SETUP > SOURCE...

Set the ouput color setup EDIT > COLOR SETUP > OUTPUT...

Set the Quark color manager preferences

Set your output styles EDIT > OUTPUT STYLES

When you export to PDF ( or Print), make sure you choose the output style you created earlier

You may still run into some differences if you use spot colours because Quark 7 and CS3 use different pantone references, but if you follow this setup your CMYK values should match between programs

THANK YOU, nitro, for taking the time to put this "tutorial" together!
