    How not to duplicate images

Hello, first of all, I'm not an english native speaker, so excuse me if I have mistakes. Now let's go with my problem.

I've created a web with about 9 pages. In each page there are common elements, such as the menu with all the areas of the web. The problem comes when I export the web to html. Then, in the image folder, every image of that menu is repeated 9 times, once for each page, just changing the last part of the name of the image. I wanna know if there's a way to avoid that happening. The problem comes when the web is online. Every time I try to enter in an area every image has to reload again (instead of taking the previous one from the cache), although the only part that changes is the text. That makes the web navigation reeeeaaallllyyy slowwww.

So I wanna know if anyone can help me with this issue, because is the web I've created for the company I work for, and my boss will prefer it to navigate in a faster way :-)

     Thanks everyone!!

Re: How not to duplicate images

Hello, it would be good if you tell us with which version of QuarkXpress you are working with, and under which operating system. I just tried that in Quark 7.31 under OSX 10.5, where I duplicated an image on several pages either through apple-D, through copy-paste, and through drag-and-drop from the library. In each case, the exported webpages refer to the same image file.

If for some reason this is not the case with your project, i suggest you use a Library where you keep the images that are used at several instances, and drag and drop from there. Let us know if this helps.

Thanks Manuel for your answer. I'm workin with Windows Xp and Quark 7.31. I've also duplicated with Ctrl+D and copy and paste, but I'll try to drag and drop from my library. I'll tell you if that works.

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Re: How not to duplicate images

Did you have any luck with getting Quark to not export lots of copies of the same image? I have exactly the same problem - I have images on the Master page, which appear on every page of the website. But when exporting to HTML Quark makes a copy of the same image for every page (and resaves and renames every image on the page, too!).
I'd love to know if you solved it!
Perhaps you could post a reply?

Re: How not to duplicate images

Hello there, sorry for being late answering, I just forgot the message I left in this forum Sad

I'm sorry to say the problem still continues. What I've done to improve the loading of the web is to join as much images as I can in one. My menu was divided in 6 areas, each one with a diferent photo, so I joined them and make one big photo because normally is faster to load one 100kb image than 5 20kb images. So I try to "delete" as many elements as I could joining them together (when possible). I hope this tips help you in your web creation. Smile

    Bye

No idea about Web features, but you should at least update for free to 8.5 (8.5.1 annonunced). The last updates always solve issues, so even if that one is still not solved you'd better update anyway. HTH.

Re: How not to duplicate images

The way I resolved it was to painstakingly go through the HTML, and link the image name to the appropriate image, and discard the extra images produced in the export. To be honest, I really do think that Quark needs to come along way before it works as a professional web design package.

Re: How not to duplicate images

I tested XPress 8.5.1 and XPress 9.0 and could not reproduce the duplicate issue.
I test by importing a picture on master > Added few more pages to layout based on master page > Exported the layout > check the image folder > only one image is exported.

Multiple images are exported for same image referred if you modify any image instance.  Are you performing some other steps?

Re: How not to duplicate images

I've been having this issue too, but I think I came across a suitable solution in Quark 9.1 that also works for Quark 8.1.6.

    1. After importing an object onto the master page, you create new pages and the image name gets modified for each.

    2. Go to the first page with the image on it, click on the image box, and select ITEM: MODIFY.

    3. On the very last tab, called EXPORT, you will see some options for exporting that image.

    4. Edit the File Name field to contain whatever you want the image to be called. You may as well edit the Alternate Text field now, too, so that it is more descriptive. That will help with search engine optimization later.

    5. Copy the file name and click okay.

    6. Now go to the next page with the image and do the same thing. Past the exact same file name in the File Name field.

    7. Click Okay.

    8. Here's the tricky part. When you click Okay, you're going to get an error message that says that file name is already being used. It will ask you how you want to resolve the conflict. Just ignore it. Click Cancel.

    9. Even though you click Cancel, Quark will preserve the file name you just entered. Whenever you try to enter the Modify dialogue box for that image, you will get that error message again. As long as you click Cancel, the file name will stay the same.

    10. Repeat those steps for other instances where the image is used. You should only have to do it once for each picture box, but that's a lot easier than editing the image names in the HTML code.

    11. Now, when you export your project as HTML, there should only be one instance of that image in your folder and it should export fine, without any errors.
