Quark 8 down save to Quark 6 help

    Hello,

I recently upgraded to Quark 8 on OSX. I'm trying to down save a file to Quark 6. I go to >File>Export>Project and the only Quark 6 down save options I have are Japanese and Korean. Any idea why I can't do a regular version?

Because every version of QuarkXPress (except version 1.x) only downsaves 1 version. You can export – to XPress 7.x. If you want to downsave to 6, you will need QuarkXPress 7.x to open and downsave to 6.x. You can try looking over at Markzware if you want as they have XTensions that allow you to downsave to other versions, but their product is not free. Right now though, I doubt they have anything for XPress 8.x. It's too new.

Re: Quark 8 down save to Quark 7 help

You say that..."You can export - to XPress 7..." But, How? I go to "EXPORT" and the only options for me are: LAYOUT AS PDF LAYOUT AS PROJECT LAYOUT AS EPS I have been working for years in Quark 4.11 {yes... I know, can you believe what an idiot I am?} I just made the BIG JUMP to 8 -love it by the way- but... I have created this ad in QuarkXpress 8, but the publisher only accecpts QuarkXpress 7 documents... What do I do???? Please Advise/HELP! Thank You! File > Export > Layout as Project. Then in the bottom of the dialog box you'll find a pop-up menu. Choose Version 7.0.

Hi Erik, I recently purhcaseda  new iMac that is running on the 10.6 Snow Leopard, unfortunately Q7 isn't compatible with the operating system. My printers and my editor only use 7 with no plans to upgrade. I got the test run version of 8 and exported my files to 7, but when I sent the test files to my printer they would not open. I sent them to myself on my old computer that runs 7 and they still wouldn't open. Any thoughts?

Re: Quark 8 down save to Quark 6 help

With Quark 8.15 for Mac (OS X 10.6.2), I saved a file to Quark 7 via Export Layouts as Project, then opened it in 7.31 and saved it to 6.

The user on the other end has Quark 6 for Windows and tells me she can't open the file because it is formatted for Mac. Isn't Quark cross-platform? Is it more likely I have made a mistake in saving it?

I did open the Quark 6 file in 7 and again in 8, although I only viewed it and didn't make any changes. Did that alter the file?

    Thank you,

    David

Re: Quark 8 down save to Quark 6 help

    Hi, David,

of course QuarkXPress files are cross platform with the usual suspects (fonts, a few graphic formats etc.)

As Windows expects file extensions, please make sure that you add a .qxp to the filename.

Secondly, for downsaving to work correctly, you shoudl always use the latest subversion of each program, e.g. QuarkXPress 7.5 (and not 7.31) to open a downsaved QXP8 file and QuarkXPress 6.52 (not 6.1 or 6.5) to open the downsaved QXP7 file.

    Then it should work.

That must have been it--I forgot about upgrading QuarkXPress 7.31 to the latest version.

    Dear Matthias

I am considering upgrading from QuarkXpress 6 to 8. Could you tell me if it is possible to open files created in 6 if I go for the upgrade. I wouldn't have a need to backsave, just to open.

    Thanks

    Hi Margaret,

yes, QuarkXPress 8 can open any file created by version 3.1 and higher, so also QuarkXPress 6.

If you just want to print, opening is fine, if you want to continue working with the file created in 6 once, then you should convert the 6-file to an 8-file (by holding the opion key when opening).

You can test that yourself with the 60-day Test Drive: http://8.quark.com/evaluation.html

Try giving the file a different name.

Re: Quark 8 down save to Quark 6 help

I jumped from 6.5 to 8 when I upgraded to OS 10.6. The export to v7 feature works, however when I open the 7 file, there are reflow problems with the text (all opentype fonts). This is a huge problem! Why is this happening?

Alot of my clients are ALSO on 7 and unwilling to upgrade to 8. I couldn't buy 7 because its unsupported on OS 10.6. So what am I supposed to do? The clients require app files for their archives and for making any necessary last minute tweaks before sending to printer. Otherwise I would stick to just sending them PDFs.
