    QuarkXPress 8.01 available

    Hi, all,

last night Quark released QuarkXPress 8.01. It is a free update for all QuarkXPress 8 users:
    http://8.quark.com

Besides bug fixes it gives you the option to choose whether spellchecking is case sensitive or not.

    Best regards
    Matthias

I can honestly say I have only experienced one bug in v8 (so far) and that was to do with the font pull down menu in Character Attributes not working after a while. Other than that, v8 has been perfect for me. Probably not the case for other users out there but maybe I am one of the lucky ones?

What are the bug fixes? A 616MB download for a spell checking tweak and Pantone Goe swatches seems a tad excessive.

Matthias, One serious bug is if I have a PDF file that has fifteen pages and I import that PDF into several QuarkXPress 6.5 picture boxes. For example, into box one I import page 1 of the PDF; into box two I import page 2 of the PDF, and so on. When I save and open the version 6.5 project in QuarkXPress 7.3, 7.31, or 8.0, all the picture boxes display the same page of the PDF. Has this been fixed? Also the zoom tool deselects copy after zooming in. Undo doesn't undo after using space/align if projects are still selected. If you deselect the objects they undo as expected. That's all I have noticed so far, but I am not using it on a daily basis yet because there is no scale tool available yet. This is a serious omission on Quarks part. Scaling is a fundamental process Jim

True, that would be a bit much. You can find a list of bugs fixed here: http://8.quark.com/techinfo/known_issues.html

Also, the 8.01 posted is a full installer, therefore its size.

    Hi, Jim,

    Jim Hughes:

For example, into box one I import page 1 of the PDF; into box two I import page 2 of the PDF, and so on. I just tried it on my machine, I do not have this issue. Have you reported that to TechSupport, were they able to reproduce the issue?

Also the zoom tool deselects copy after zooming in.

Also doesn't happen for me. As soon as I select the text content tool again, text is selected again. And by using the shortcut key for zoom (ctrl+shift), it is not even deselected at all.

Undo doesn't undo after using space/align if projects are still selected. If you deselect the objects they undo as expected.

Works here. Seriously, can you contact tech support please? Maybe it is becuase you use a different edition, maybe because of your machine or maybe I am doing different steps than you.

I am not using it on a daily basis yet because there is no scale tool available yet. This is a serious omission on Quarks part. Scaling is a fundamental process

Point taken. All of the XPert Tools will be integrated into QuarkXPress bit by bit, so please be a bit more patient. We'd love to give all of them to you immediately, however having quality as a No. 1 priority, it will take a bit to ensure quality.

    Best

    – that could've been done in the major release ensuring some 'value for money'. So now the words "bit by bit" now in the open, we're expected to have yet more updates which brings me back to my first response in this thread – "the first of many". Kapow!

    Re: QuarkXPress 8.01 available

Matthias, I have contacted Quark technical support about the Pdf issue, this was the response:
    tech support:
This particularly item is posted internally, but once version 8.01 is released it will be within our Public Knowledge Base at this location along with the other items http://www.quark.com/service/desktop/support/techinfo/knowledgebase.html Here you are Applies to: QuarkXPress 7.3 to 8.0 — All Mac OS, All Windows Problem Description: I have a PDF file that has fifteen pages. I am importing that PDF into several QuarkXPress 6.5 picture boxes. For example, into box one I import page 1 of the PDF; into box two I import page 2 of the PDF, and so on. When I save and open the version 6.5 project in QuarkXPress 7.3, 7.31, or 8.0, all the picture boxes display the same page of the PDF. Background: This behavior is occurring due to changes made in the picture import feature in QuarkXPress 7.31 (the problem does not occur in QuarkXPress 7.0 through 7.2). It is happening because QuarkXPress assumes that, if the same picture is imported into more than one box, the file information and link should be exactly the same for all boxes linked to that picture. This assumption is not true for imported multiple page PDF files. The problem is fixed in QuarkXPress 8.01 Solution: Upgrade/Update to QuarkXPress 8.01. Also the other problems I have verified. One other little thing I did not mention is when re-naming names in output styles. If you want to go from an uppercase letter to a lowercase letter, i.e. PDF to Pdf, you get the message that:
This Output Style name is already in use. Please use a different name. [149]
This one is not a big deal but it does not follow standard naming conventions. Jim BTW, the pdf problem is now fixed in 8.01. I opened a document as described above in Quark 7.5 and all the placed pdf pages showed only the first page of the pdf. In 8.01 it showed the correct second page and all subsequent pages.

    Re: QuarkXPress 8.01 available

Does this update fix the problem with inability to change the color of table cells? Does it also fix the inability to close a Bezier object after it's drawn, so it can be filled?

Those are the two issues I discovered so far.

I'm sorry to see that the update has not resolved the problem with drop caps failing after approximately 32,000 characters of any story: the drop cap letter resizes correctly, but it aligns to the paragraph baseline (i.e. doesn't drop), overlapping the end of the previous paragraph, and the T1 DROP CAP paragraph doesn't align correctly -- sometimes runs too short, sometimes text renders outside the text box into the margin. This error was first reported by Ben Campbell and myself in this forum on Sep 11.

    Hi Mark,

First issue : Inability to change the color of table cells?

    Solution :

Draw a table of any number of rows and column

Use the text content tool and click in the first cell (Cursor should be blinking in that cell).

    Open color palette

    Select background color

Choose the color you want to give to that cell

Second issue : Inability to close a Bezier object after it's drawn

Solution : You can close the Bezier tool and apply the color in it. Make sure that you select the starting point after the shape is drawn, it will complete the path and then you can apply color to it.

Problem with printing. I've noticed that when I print using an irregular size or even a half-page size from Q8.01 it sends it to the printer as Letter size. This only started happening after the 8.01 update. Please fix.

    Re: QuarkXPress 8.01 available

Hi! Mathias. I found a couple of them. The nastier: Quark frequently crashes after pressing the button to chose and change a font. No problem if I write the name of the font (or part of it).

The annoying: I got wrong and right Drop Caps mixed illogically in the same document. In the wrong ones, the capital letter does not align with the lower line (the glyph is big but does not drop), and the first line of the paragraph does not respect the right hand side margin.

    Regards

    Mauricio
