QuarkXpress 8 Spellcheck Options (or lack thereof)

I've downloaded the test drive of Version 8 and could not be more disappointed that the "possible capitalization/spacing error" function is STILL something we have to tolerate. I know this subject has been addressed numerous times since its arrival with V 7.3 (I think that's when it reared its ugly head). I work on publications that contain hundreds of ads which are created in Quark as single documents and then placed in the master publication in their original form. This means that spellcheck run on the initial ad doesn't carry over to the master publication. My latest creation shows 3,789 "suspect words" when I start spellcheck - and this is AFTER opening my auxiliary dictionary where I have words like "Chevy" stored. Anything typed using "all caps" (not caps lock) shows up as an error: For example, typing THANK YOU produces 2 "suspect words." The date for our publication appears on each page (via the master page), so OCTOBER shows up 112 times as a "suspect word" in a 112 page publication. So that's 112 of the 3,789 things I have to look at... aaaarrgghhh!!!! I literally have to set aside 45 minutes during the last 2 hours of the production of each issue to do spellcheck, and invariably this is an hour before the electronic files are due at the commercial printer. I would skip it altogether but most times 5 or 6 actual misspelled words will get fixed, and anyone who does ads knows that if you spell a word wrong, the advertiser may balk about paying for it. How can this still be an issue with QuarkXpress 8? I don't particularly want to pay $299 for an upgrade to continue with the biggest headache I experience with Quark. At home, I have version 7 (works fine on Windows Vista) and did not upgrade to 7.31 because of this problem. I do the same work at home (for another company) that I do at the office where I'm stuck with 7.31 (version 7 did not work well on the Mac). So far in the posts I've read regarding this issue, nobody from Quark has responded (unless I missed it).

In re-reading this post I'm also trying to figure out what happened to the paragraphs I created when writing it and why my signature is missing. I haven't posted since they changed the format and don't know what I need to do differently. QuarkXPress 7.31, OS X v10.4.9 Dual 2.7 GHz PowerPC G5, 2.5Gb RAM (I cut and pasted this from my profile!) --and still can't make a paragraph break...

I believe it is a Safari compatibility issue. Firefox wraps paragraphs correctly.

As asked before, Quark, why would you change the forums if it is not compatible with the most used Macintosh browser?

The issue related to captilalization has been fixed in the latest QuarkXPress 8.01 which was released just 2 days back.

We have added SpellCheck exceptions under the SpellCheck option in QuarkXPress>>Preferences.

You can download the QuarkXPress 8.01 installer/updater from the following link:-

First let me say THANK YOU that someone from Quark responded! Next, what about those of us who still use 7.31? Will there be a patch or update? My employer is not ready to spend $299 each for us to upgrade, so in the meantime I am still stuck with the problem of over 3,000 "suspect words" in my publications. PLEASE! If you can update Quark 8, why can't you do the same for 7.31?????

I've been working with QuarkXpress since version 3.32 as a Production Assistant at an Advertising Agency, and now as a Director of Production at a Communications Firm, we've recently upgraded to 8, however, I've seen my team having relatively high hopes with the new features, only to see them deal with miserable disappointment; when of all things, Spell Check became an issue... similar to Aristotle’s issue, each occurrence of the same words kept showing up as suspect, causing delays and headaches. It wasn’t text heavy, 4,600 words with 1,426 unique. I've researched the forums and looked to 8.01 hoping that it would solve our issue, but failed. The exact same ‘unique’ words showed up as suspect. Why? I then took the same document, exported out as a 7.31 and Spell Checked, results? No stalling, for some reason spell check on the lower version of Quark was efficient. My simple theory that the very first dialog box that pops up when you do a spell check are both different: QuarkXpress 7.31 says Word Count Layout Total: 4600 Unique: 1426 Suspect: 51 And only 51 hits pop up! QuarkXpress 8 says Word Count Layout Total: 4600 Unique: 1426 My Mac Artist filtered thru 1426 instances! Quark HELP! WE DON’T WANT TO REVERT BACK! P.S. Our departments all on Leopard, 10.5.4, Intel Macs

Re: QuarkXpress 8 Spellcheck Options (or lack thereof)

We have introduced the spell checker functionality in QuarkXPress 7. This update provides a preference to control spelling checks for capitalization of words within a sentence, sentence capitalization, word spacing, and sentence spacing.

You can download the same from http://labs.quark.com. You would see the same under " Quark lab Projects for QuarkXPress 7". You would be required to create m account here which would then allow you to download the Required component update.

I have a user who has a related spell check problem. In previous versions of Quark XPress, she could run spell check and the first time it came across a word, she could click Ignore and it wouldn't show the word again for the rest of that document. Now, she clicks Ignore and it still stops on every occurrence of that word. Is there something we're missing? Anne

And irked by the Quark spell check I found MS Word like spell check XT - AutoCorrectXT. I can ignore all the misspelled words and add them to the dictionary without making an auxiliary dictionary. And much more. It can be found at www.athenasoftsolutions.com/Products.html

Re: QuarkXpress 8 Spellcheck Options (or lack thereof)

I downloaded the Quark Labs' SpellChecker.qrc file, it does offer new preferences, but when I check them all and do a spellcheck, QX still keeps flagging "suspect capitalization".

    What am I not doing?

Since computers can't understand the content of your text, they have to go by rules, such as "capitalize the first word after certain punctuation marks." If you wrote:

In 1973, Sammy Davis Jr. had a top-ten hit with the song "Candy Man."

…you might get a capitalization error because the word "had" is not capitalized, but comes after a period in the abbreviation for junior. I just tried it, and I got one. If you go through as it asks you about certain words, you can probably figure out why certain words are being flagged.

Right, but the idea with the updated SpellChecker was capitalization "scanning" could be turned off.

If I check the box, the capitalization is not identified as being wrong.
