    A Comprehensive Book for QID?

Is somebody (like peachpit etc) please going to write a book on QID. We (definitely me) need one. Reading these posts, QID is a lot more powerful than the small selection of tutorials available. Obviously this forum is the only real source of information and it's used by many people, but it can be long winded to find a solution. Surely this alone justifies a publication, never mind the fact that QID has been available for 2 years. I'm sure people would buy a 'Real World' type book if it was available. Lets hope for one soon!

Seems like most of the "big-name" authors enjoy drinking the Adobe Kool Aid now... Sad

I am currently investigating the possibility of writing such a book on QID. What features/lessons would you want/need to see covered?

    Thanks!

Coming from a Quark/print background, a comprehensive book would be VERY helpful! Especially outlining all the different script and action options. Like what do all those actions do? And how do you even begin to create an animation? There is very little detailed documentation out there. It does no good for Quark to include QID in version 8 now, if we print designers can't get the training on how to utilize its features. Thanks and good luck if you undertake the venture!

Re: A Comprehensive Book for QID?

Hi That's very encouraging indeed. Thanks. I'm wondering - would it be possible to write it by creating a quality site. i.e. step by step. I understand this would be difficult as not all the techniques would be used. Failing that, more explanation of expressions, and as in photoshop I've come to realise that there are different ways to do the same things. I.e. when writing scripts. I have written scripts before and then realised later I could have made them simpler.

I'll write another post later as time is short right now.

    Thanks

A print book would be the way to go, or a downloadable book. The problem is, you're working on something and you need to look up information or technique or tricks on how to proceed. The "help" screen is somewhat helpful but not at all browsable. Browsability is the key, which gets us back to something in print. ID is sooooo complex, kind of like learning photoshop; and who ever learned photoshop without a book to refer to?

     @jdh

     Hi there,

I've lurked on this forum for quite a while now - I came across another of your comments about writing a book on another thread. I would definitely be interested. Put me down for two! I think what really needs to be covered is 'expressions' in QID. These would seem to add a powerful new dimension to QID but there is NO documentation for them. Which seems a real shame.

Good luck with your project. Keep us posted on when we can expect it!!

    Hi, JPrit,

so you are looking for a best practise book or a "How to solve xyz" compendium rather than a manual, right?

I'd love it if anybody would write a book like and Quark would definitely help. However the book market is not anymore what it used to be and users seem to prefer free Internet stuff and videos.

I have created a small series of internal trainings about advanced Interactive (like Expressions, Control actions etc.) a while ago. They were sample files and PPTs (well, and me talking). I could probably adjust them so they are understandable without me explaining them.

If you think that's helpful, I can surely post them. It will cost you though!

Though not much: Wink I'll expect you to post a URL with a Flash project made with Interactive Designer or QuarkXPress 8.

    Best regards

Yes, you go Mathias! Please, anything would help, and it would certainly be good for Quark if there was some definitive how-to information out there. We really need documentation, tricks and tips for QID. Personally, I would prefer a book, which is easily browsable, but a discrete site with posts and videos would help.

     Hi Mathias,

I'd love to see them! I'm really hoping to get my head around QID's expressions, I think it could be really powerful (and still easier to use than AS in Flash!!)

As for the cost, you can find me at www.jorcan.co.uk

As you can see from the source this is a flash site overlaid on a CSS site (to get around the Flash SEO issue)

Most of the flash has been done in QID, about 70% - including all the site navigation. Have a look, let me know what you think. Hopefully its enough to cover the cost of the tuts!!!

     All the best

    J

Very nice site. Impressed. I'll link it from the URL post if you don't mind.

Ok, give me a week and I'll post them.

     Hi Mathias,

Please feel free to post the link.

I downloaded some of your predefined elements which are posted at the top of the forum last night - very useful, thank you. By looking at the way you had structured some of the conditional elements I was able to complete my quiz. I will post about it on that thread.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi, all,

    Matthias Guenther (Quark):
Ok, give me a week and I'll post them.

I had 8 hours in a train today, so I completed the ones in question: Control Actions, Expressions (& Menu/List Items).

I will put them online and post a new post.

    Feedback then welcome.

    Have a nice weekend!
