I would suggest using the ASCII escape codes for those characters inside XPress and not relying on Word to do it for you. Word brings over a lot of junk into XPress usually and it's probably making some extended character calls on those fonts that XPress does not support; particularly if your version of Word is relatively new. XPress 6.x was the first version of XPress to handle Open Type fonts and then only the first 255 characters of the set. XPress 5.x never had that ability and if Word is using an OTF then XPress is probably choking on it.
By ASCII escape codes, I'm meaning the ALT+XXX form that gives you those characters. I'm assuming you are PC. If you aren't then it's a different matter (and easier on Mac).
