Is there any way to just turn off color management in Quark 7?

In Quark 6, we would just Disable the CMS extension. Our Rip would handle the color management. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see anything to do with Color Management in the Extensions Manager.

    Hi,

I would like to inform you that we do not have any option to turn off color manger in QuarkXPress 7.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi, Mike,

you cannot disable CM in QuarkXPress 7 or 8, however you can tell QuarkXPress 7/8 to not color manage your pictures, which is probably what you want, correct?

Set up your workflow so that the pictures are already in the target color space, e.g. CMYK pictures for CMYK output. Plus, ensure that the pictures have an ICC profile attached. Now in Source Setup for CM do NOT check the “manage CMYK sources for CMYK destinations” option.

Then QuarkXPress will not touch your pictures if you output to the same color space.

If you additionally output via "as-is", then also color spaces are not altered.

Of course if new objects need to be created (e.g. due to shadows or transparencies) CM will kick in for these.

    Is that what you need?

My preference is to allow ANY image to 'pass through' Quark as it is and let my Rip handle the Color Management. It just seems simpler to me to have color managed in one consistent place. We get files from several different applications, and I'd rather all my files be put through the same process.

    Hi, Mike,

so this would work for you then, right?

Unless you also want QuarkXPress to not use ICC-based CM when creating new objects (like transparencies). That is not possible, as somehow XPress needs to know how to create them (especially when an RGB image shines througha CMYK image etc.).

    Thanks

    Matthias,

I had an issue just yesterday... A printed piece w/ 2 grayscale images. Darkest areas were 100% k in Photoshop. 84% in pdf exported from Quark 'As Is'.

Color Management in Photoshop is off.

I checked to see that Quark was not managing my images

What should I be doing different.

    Hello,

Can you please download the evaluation version of QuarkXPress 8 and then try to replicate the issue?

Re: Is there any way to just turn off color management in Quark 7?

I dont' see the point of trying to duplicate the problem w/ Quark 8 when I have no intention of buying Quark 8.

None of my customers are using Quark 8 so I have no reason to buy it.

I do not have the same problem outputting the same Quark file from Quark 6.5. From Quark 6.5 w/ color management off,

my images are output w/o change - densities just as would be found in Photoshop.

Does that bit of information help at all?

Create a new color swatch with a name thats not Black, break it 0c 0m 0y 100k, apply this to any placed greyscale tiffs and output As Is.Umbrella

Re: Is there any way to just turn off color management in Quark 7?

    Glenn,

I created a new color swatch, as ordered, named Test Black - 0/0/0/100 - and colored my 2 grayscale images Test Black instead of default Quark Black. I output the pdf 'As Is' (which is our SOP) and the grayscale images in the pdf are as they should be (unmanaged by Quark 7). Your work-around is effective. Thank you for your time & input!!

Does Quark have a patch in the works to correct this problem with Quark 7 Color Management??

Re: Is there any way to just turn off color management in Quark 7?

I thought it was fixed with 7.5, maybe I'm mistaken, or maybe it broke again with 7.52. Pretty sure it behaved like this with 7  7.1  7.2  7.31. Maybe its only certain types of TIF from certain versions of photoshop, I've complained on the forums and directly with some of people who frequent the forums. Quark prioritise things to their own rules.

7 has been so bad, if people send files here that are 7 I'll open and work in v8 as the inevetilble text reflow is no worse than opening in the wrong 7dot release. Quark 8's flattening is way superior to v7 (which is often unfit for purpose). When you read some of the known issues it scares me that they can let them go. I did a job last year where virtually all the pics were EPS with Postscript Color Management checked, what do I tell the client next year?

Re: Is there any way to just turn off color management in Quark 7?

Funny you should mention the EPS with Postscript Color Management turned on--- That's exactly why I'm here tonight!! My dilemma is this: Six months ago we did a job, images were CMYK, EPS with Color Mgmnt checked on. I exported a PDF using CMYK + Spot. Ran them through Prinergy pdf workflow. The images looked very washed out. A button in Prinergy allowed me to "Override Embedded Profiles" and the images reproduced much nicer. Now, the job is back with revisions. New file from client. Most of the same images. So I tried the same thing and it did not work the same way! So, now I'm back trying to troubleshoot the Quark files for any differences in the color management. Job six months ago, look in Usage/Profiles, nothing is color managed. Look at "Profile Information" - Picture Type and Color Space both "Unknown". Profile, Rendering Intent, and Color Manage are , respectively, None, Perceptual, and "Unchecked", though all three are grayed out. Job today - Look in Usage/Profiles and all images are using QuarkXpress Legacy CMYK profile. Profile Information - Picture Type is Unknown, but Color Space is XYZ (?). Profile is blank, Intent is Perceptual, and Color Manage IS CHECKED. Again, last 3 items grayed out. Color Management preferences are set to "Enable Access to Picture Profiles". So how in the heck can I turn the profile OFF? In Usage, I can only replace it with "Generic XYZ Profile." The job we did 6 months ago does not show a Profile present, and the one we're doing today shows me there's color management going on, but I can't strip it out to be like the previous job. The images are the exact same images! I thought it might be that the older job was done on an older version of Quark 7. We, thankfully have a rarely-used machine that hasn't been upgraded, so I tried Version7.01. All is the same! And if I try to re-import the picture, the Color Management box is CHECKED and Gray (Unavailable to edit). It's very frustrating that this is so difficult to unlock. Shouldn't "Enable Access to Picture Profiles" enable me to access my picture profiles? So I can get rid of them. If anyone has an idea, I'd be grateful. Thanks........
