Idea [I] TIP: Use synchronized content for buttons

    Hi, all,

maybe a time-saving tip when creating buttons. As you know, buttons have a pre-defined number of pages, which are basically button states.

For example a "simple" button has four states:
    1. Up.
    2. Over.
    3. Down.
    4. Hit.

    Up
This is how the button looks like when just "sitting" on the page.

    Over
This is how the button looks like when the user moves the mouse over the button

    Down
This is how the button looks like when the user clicks (and holds) the mouse button over the button.

    Hit
The active area, so where it reacts to mouse-overs and clicks. Example: You have a tiny circular button and wantthe user to only have to click within fifty pixel around the circle to trgger something. Make the hit area 50 pixel larger than the actual object shown. The Hit page doesn't have to be any design, just a box with a background (or several boxes), as just the shape is taken.

    Tip:

So when you use text on the button (like "next page"), you probably want the text to say the same thing on all first three states (pages) of the button. Now you want to redefine the button to say "NEXT" only. You have to go to three pages to change the text. Not when you are using synchronized text. Just synch the content (and onyl the content, so that you can use different colors for each state if you want to) and changing the text is done in a jiffy.

I have made the button available for download, just drag it out of the library onto an interactive layout. Of course you can also modify and adjust text and layout of it yourself and use it as a starting point for your own button.

Click to download editiable button for QuarkXPress 8 / Mac or for QuarkXPress 7 / Mac.
(Let me know if you need Windows)

    Enjoy!
    Matthias

Re: TIP: Use synchronized content for buttons

That is a great tip, if I just new that before I started creating all my buttons :)  There is also a master page, but I guess it is not suitable if you need different colours etc.!

Still  I would like a "copy to all" function. So just create the textbox and text once, copy that to all stages, sync. and make the modifications, like different colours etc.!
