Helvetica Neue family - Quark swaps them

I have two friends who both have recent iMacs running OSX 10.5. They both use Linotype FontExplorer to activate and manage their fonts.

However, when they activate the Helvetica Neue family of Postscript fonts (all of whose names start with a number - eg 45 Helvetica Light), it is substituted by Quark 7.5 with the System versions from the Helvetica.dfont family which seems to be essential to Quark, because if that font is removed, Quark will no longer launch.

Both of my friends would like to know how to solve this, especially as one of them distributes his partly-prepared files to his production team for them to complete the jobs on Macs running earlier system versions.

Is this a problem with the System, or with Quark 7? I can't work it out. Sad

Hmm, according to the little bit I just read, the Helvetica.dfont and the HelveticaNeue.dfont's cannot be disabled in Leopard. I would guees that the HelveticaNeue.dfont is probably conflicting here. Leopard changed some font requirements that weren't there in the previous releases. So, I suspect they will either have to find a different font, or live with the irritation.

Thanks Erik, that's interesting, because when I activate the Postscript versions of Helvetica Neue on my Mac (OS 10.4.11) using FontExplorer, it tells me I must first deactivate those causing a potential conflict - which I do, by clicking the button provided in FE. If my friends running Leopard are unable to do that, they will obviously have problems.

    To be continued ...

Thanks Matthias, it's obviously a bit of an issue!

I think our problem is that Quark does not warn us when the Postscript version of Helvetica Neue is not installed, and merely substitutes the System version - whatever that may be - with no "Missing Fonts" dialogue. Is that something which could be corrected in the next update, or is it already corrected in Quark 8?

    Hi, britsmith,

QuarkXPress only sees the PostScript name and all fonts identify themselves with the same PS name. When QuarkXPress notices differences in the font metrics, you'll get the warning message that the document is reflown using system fonts.

We are looking into changing this behaviour in the future.

    Thanks
    Matthias
