How to export monotint (grayscale) PDFs?

    Hi all,

My latest project is a black-and-white book, and I thought the safest thing to give the press is a grayscale PDF. I'm using QXP 7.2. However, I'm dumbfounded by the fact that Quark's default black, as is a custom-defined CMYK 0-0-0-100% color, is not exported as a full black in the grayscale color space. The Registration color and an RGB 0-0-0 black are exported that way. How is one supposed to provide a monotint layout to a press? Is there a straightforward solution?

I'd like to avoid composite CMYK outputs, as the project contains a number of rgb images, which appear to use rich grays even if desaturated in Quark, and I'm not sure how the press will convert rich CMYK grays to black tint only.

I've started another thread about this problem in color management. Please visit http://forums.quark.com/p/20449/81982.aspx to see what's happened so far.

Any help would be appreciated very much!

    Hi Henry

Try this: Under main menu 'Edit' > 'Output Styles' create a new PDF style. Name it and type in necessary values for resolution, compression, bleed etc.

Under 'Colour': 'Mode': Composite and for 'Setup': Greyscale.

I have used this for B&W ads to be sure that only black are present in the the file. You can check the colours in  Acrobat Pro: 'Advanced' > 'Print production' > Output Preview.

    Regards Geir
