I'm having trouble getting my tab fillers to work. So far, I highlight the text (with tabs) in question, load the tabs menu, enter "." (or whatever character) for "Fill characters," and click "apply," but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Please help.

Yep, you have to click on the little arrow at the top of the tab ruler to select a specific tab, then enter the fill character.
