    New Quark Website Design

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post on here so I hope somebody can help me.

I've just finished designing my own website using Quark.  It's now online and seems to be ok apart from a couple of things.

I've noticed that on PC's there are some little red boxes with X's that appear with some graphics.

Does anyone know what to do to get rid of these?

Also some of my links seem to struggle on the PC's.  They are fine when I'm on my Mac.  Any ideas?

    My website is www.hotsaucesolutions.co.uk

Please note that I am a novice at website development so any tips with my coding would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    Simon

    Hello Simon,

As you are new to website development, I would say Great Work! Smile

Also, I was not able to experience any graphics/image with "X", the images are appearing fine. The "X" would only appear, if the webpage is not able to locate the image ( check the image link /location).

The link navigation is also fine, no broken links so far at least for me, could you please be more specific ?

    Rgds,

    Gaurav

    Hi Gaurav,

Thanks for the kind words, I think I've sorted the X's within some of the graphics on my site now.

I think the problem was that Quark saved the picture boxes as gif's and when I re-saved them as jpgs they'd be ok.

I think it was only a problem on Microsoft IE, but seems ok now.

The links seem to work fine as well.

    Thanks for getting in touch.

    Cheers,

    Si

Excellent, it looks really good! Although some of your print prices are a fraction less than mine so I will have to work on that!  ;-)

There should be a gallery section on here where people can display the websites they have created in Quark so other Quark designers can leave constructive comments.

You can use http://ilovedesign.com for that.

    Hi Georgina,

    Thanks for your comments.

To have a gallery would be good because at first when I was doing it I didn't have a clue what you could do in Quark for a website.

It's nothing flashy but maybe in time, who knows??

Now it's trying to get it up high in Google's rankings.  Seems a lot of work, any tips??

P.S. Don't be dropping your prices too much!! lol

    Hi Hot Sauce,

I like your website but I think you are going to come up against some huge problems to get anywhere in google rankings. The first bit of searchable text is nearly on line 500. I have noticed that on your first page, the majority of the information is within images. This will not be searchable by google. Also you have contained the CSS in the html document, and not on a separate style sheet. Google has to go through all of this before it gets to any content. I would suggest stripping this out and containing it in its own external CSS document. Please don't this as crtisim as i was in the same boat when I designed my site in flash and had to totally redesign it in dreamweaver to get the results from google I was after.

    Hi,

Thanks for the comments, it was my first real attempt at designing a website so I'm a bit of a novice with all of it!

How would I go about doing it?

If I open the html docs in Dreamweaver can i just copy and paste the style copy into another doc and upload it to my ftp server?

If I was to put more copy on my front page would that help?

Would hate to have to re-design the whole site again as it would take ages!!

One other thing is that Google has only just started to index my site, is it likely to take a while before it moves any further up the rankings?

    Many thanks,

    Si

    Re: New Quark Website Design

You can export a separate style sheet from quark in the export options (its a tickable box in the bottom right of export). If you were to more copy on the front page that would deffinately help. I don't think you need to redesign it as it looks good. Also google loves titles and descriptions, so try and give each page a different title and description. e.g

    say for the home page.

Hot sauce Creative design - Your One Stop Shop for all your Graphic Design and Printing needs (try and get where you are in there)

    so put

Hot sauce Creative design - Your One Stop Shop for all your Graphic Design and Printing needs in and around Wigan, Lancashire

and for description try and repeat a few of your key words that are in the title.

Hot sauce Creative design - Top quality, affordable graphic design and print in Wigan, Lankashire

on the second title and description google will see the word design X 4, Wigan and Lankashire X 2, Print X 2. Now if you apply this to all of your pages but focus on different keywords for each page, such as web design, leaflets and flyers, but awlays put Wigan Lankashire in there and then if someone puts in say Graphic design in wigan you have a better chance of it popping up.

Google can take from a week or two to index your site, up to 2 months, so its just a waiting game really.

Good luck, hope this makes sense.

    Hi YGD

Thanks for all the tips I'll give them a go.

I've put decription tags within the coding for each page already is that enough?   There isn't any where else I can put them is there?

    Thanks,

    Si
