    Hi- The answer is yes In the QuarkXPress preferences > PDF you will need set it to distill later. This will allow you to use Acrbat to create the PDF. Thanks -

    Hi, I ordered Quark Xpress 7, but they sent me 8 instead so I wanted to make sure if I can use Acrobat 7 to make a pdf so that I can send that to a local newspaper  to print an ad. The newspaper wanted me to make sure I could make a pdf before I downloaded Quark 8. Once I download Quark 8 I will need to know how to set the pdf up.

    I just updated my post with the settings in the XPress preferences to enable you to use Acrobat. Please let me know if you need more info -

    No worries - Under QuarkXPress in the top left menu, scroll down to and select Preferences. After the Preferences Dialog appears, scroll down PDF. In PDF, then select the second radio button from the top on the left- "Create Postscript for later Distilling" This will then create a postscript file the Acrobat can consume and generate a PDF.

     ->File->Export->Layouts as Project

    Pull "Version" from 8.0 to 7.0

     Once you've set the quark prefs as described you need to Export to PDF this will now make a .ps file

    You will need to set details like font embedding and image resolution in the Export menus, or you can save all these as an Output Style (PDF).

    Fire up Distiller, Select the correct Settings and drag the .ps file over Distiller. Ask your printer to provide Distiller settings if you are not sure which to use.

    In XPress 7 and 8 created PDF should have all the information about Trim Box, Bleed Box, Media Box and Crop Box, when you enable 'Marks' and 'Bleed' under 'Options' in PDF dialog box.Use "Press Quality' settings in Distiller also enable "Show art, trim, & bleed boxes" option in Acrobat> Page Display Preferences".

    Thanks,

    Quark 8.1 I think is the first version that includes Trim Box and Bleed box info when Printing postcript.

    v7 and 8.0 will include the info if Export to PDF is used to create the postscript.

     v6 and earlier rely on Distiller recognizing quark's trim marks and working it out.

    There are a number of third party Plug-Ins for Distiller that can help it out. I think also there were some Quark XTensions to achieve what you are looking for.
