    Quark 8 won't start on a PC, Color Manager.qrc

I have tried removing, reinstalling, upgrading and all the suggestions I have found on the forum here and else where.  The fix looks easy if you are on a Mac. Does anyone know how to fix this problem on a PC.

Try to reset your QuarkXPress preferences, it can fix this problem as well. You will find detailed instructions here.

I tried it but I am willing to try again.  Where were those instructions located?

Hi, I wonder if cdean managed to fix his problem? I have the exact same problem. My PC is running Windows XP, and I've been using QuarkXpress 7.3 on it happily for the last two years. Now it won't open, giving the message that there is a load error in Color Manager.qrc

I've tried Manuel's suggestions about re-naming the preferences files and so on with no luck; also spent a long time on the chat with tech support so have also tried uninstalling and re-installing, have installed v7.5, and also installed the trial version of v8.12, but none of them work, all give the same error message as before.

I also tried to do a system restore back to a date when I was last using the programme successfully, but my computer said that it wouldn't run as there'd been no changes to the system since that point.

As I'm self-employed, the support person's suggestion that I'll just have to get another computer to run it on, is not very helpful! Any better ideas?

    Thanks, Mandy

    Mandy,

That was a very helpful answer from support.  Unfortunately I didn't get any more creative help from support either.  They just said it should be working.  As a sad note I have only needed quark on the PC a couple of times and have just had the customer downgrade the file to 7, which I have on my macs.  The sad part is that Quark is no longer something we even suggest anyone buying.  Lack of concerned support being one of their biggest problem for the last 5 or 6 years.  Maybe it will work when I replace that machine with a windows 7 box. Someday maybe quark will listen to their customers.  Anything is posible.  I hope you find a good solution.

     Sincerely,

    Chris

Thanks Chris for quick reply. I just had another live chat with the tech support people, who say they're still working on the problem but nothing to report yet. It's not very satisfactory. If we don't know the cause of the problem we've no way of knowing not only how to fix it but even whose fault it is and who to get cross with. I've only got the one computer and can't really justify buying another just to get a programme to work. I wonder if it will work with Windows 7 (I'm planning to bypass Vista as well)?

Hi, I had this same problem with QuarkXpress v7 on my PC and I fixed it ... with a clean install. Sounds drastic, but not as drastic as Quark's suggestion, which was to get a new computer. In between I had tried every other suggestion on very many forums plus several lengthy sessions with Quark technician. Incidentally, I later upgraded to Windows 7 and Quark insist that V7 does not work with Windows 7. Well, it works fine on mine! Good luck, Mandy

Thanks Mandy. Forgot to mention that we have QLA/9 terminal servers and about 120 users. I got the first complaint yesterday and as I was asking some user and I found that this is also happening in QuarkCopyDesk. I also read to uninstall QX but what are the probabilities of this coming back and to be more technical how is this happening, I would love to recreate it on my Win 7 so I can troubleshoot......I am going to go to support soon.....

Good luck! In fact I also tried uninstalling and re-installing, as well as downloading the trial version of Q8, and so on, but there was no success until I finally did the clean install. I did have lengthy discourse with QX support during this time, and in terms of possible cause the best they could come up with was that maybe an automatic Windows update had changed something in the settings that made it no longer compatible. They asked me to do some kind of computer status report (sorry I'm not very techy) which I duly downloaded and forwarded to them so they could analyse and find the cause, but they never gave me any feedback, except after 6 months someone called back and offered me the Q8 upgrade (at full price, mind!). That was about a year ago. I bet there are still a few folk around with the same problem so if you find the answer do share! Best wishes, Mandy
