    Convert QXP to Image (JPEG)

    Hi, all,

a few of you have asked how to convert a QuarkXPress layout or portions of it to a pixel image, namely JPEG or TIFF.

Here's how to save a group of elements as JPG (or GIF or PNG):

    1. Convert your Print layout to Web layout (by choosing menu "Layout > Layout Properties" and setting layout Type to "Web").

    2. Group the elements you want to convert to JPG (eg. the whole page if needed).

    3. Open Modify dialog (menu "Item > Modify") and navigate to last tab "Export".

    4. Check "Convert to Graphic upon Export".

    5. In "Export As" choose "JPEG" (or whatever you desire) and click "Ok". Note (or change) the "File Name"(first field).

    6. Choose "File > Export > HTML". Enter the page number you want to export.

    7. Look in the Finder/Explorer folder to which you exported. There should be a folder called "image" which contains your group (and has the same file name as set in step 5).

Should work in all versions from QuarkXPress 5 to 8, Mac & Win.

    Power Tip
Instead of converting (in step 1) you can also duplicate the layout ("Layout > Duplicate"). If you then synchronize your items (QuarkXPress 7 and 8 only) then you always have a copy from which you can quickly export a JPG, even if the elements in the Print layout have changed.

    Enjoy!
    Matthias

Re: Convert QXP to Image (JPEG)

Is there a way to make this a higher resolution? I believe since it's exporting as HTML it's only giving me a 72 dpi image.

    Hi, Ltonz,

not directly. However there's two ways I can think of getting there anyhow:

    1. Scale the group to the double size, export, and scale the resulting picture 50%. Gives you 144 dpi. Etc. for 288 dpi.

    2. Export as (static) SWF (out of Web layout). Gives you vectors.

    Does that work?

Re: Convert QXP to Image (JPEG)

Hey thanks Matthias.  Quark should make this a smoother process, but your instructions were great.  Can you clarify or add to what you said about "Exporting as (static) SWF"?  Thanks again, man.

    Hi, linkaq,

    1. Identify the element or elements you want to export as static Flash (SWF).
    2. Convert the print layout to web layout (Layout > Duplicate)
    3. Group them (if it is more than one)
    4. Go to Item > Modify, go to last tab (Export) and set the export format as SWF. You might have to set the check box "as graphics".
    5. Note the file name (first entry field)
    6. Export as HTML (File > Export)
    7. Go to the file system and look for the file name you noted in step 5.

    Done.

If you want to have dynamic SWF, then use the Interactive layout (available in QuarkXPress 8) and you can add sounds, movies, motion, interactivity and so on.

    Enjoy!

May one ask a silly question?
Why not simply export to EPS (in one step) and then convert the EPS to the raster format of your choice in the image editor of your choice?

Re: Convert QXP to Image (JPEG)

    Hi, quirkdepress,

Sure you can do that. That's the nice thing about good software, it gives you options.

The advantage of using the XTension is that it gives you even more options and can save you time:

You have options to export grids & guides (which do not export into EPS).

And it saves you a lot of time if you have a multi-page document, as it can create pixel pictures of all pages in one go (whereas the EPS to Photoshop route requires you to do it manually for each page).

    So the choice is yours.

    Enjoy!

I personally go the PDF route and have either Acrobat or Photoshop convert to whatever format/size/rez I need at the time...

And of course I automated the process. ;-)
