    Line Endings

Just a thought for the users out there struggling along in the forums here over the line endings in their posts.

I use a variety of different browsers and the current one right now is Sunrise which makes calls on the engine (Webkit) that Safari uses. I tried punching in the html code for paragraph and it worked.

Now if I could just get the editing toolbar back!

When can we expect this forum to work correctly with Safari? I've got v4 running today and I like it, but this forum is so limited without access to formatting, smilies and the return key!

    Re: Line Endings

    Hi, Glenn,

I was surprised that it didn't work, as it is just JavaScript. Here's how I got it to work (I am writing this using Safari 4 on Mac):

    1) In Safari 4 go to Preferences. In last tab (Advanced) check "Show Developer Menu" (last checkbox).

    2) A new menu appears between Bookmarks and Window, called "Developer". Choose "Developer > User Agent > Firefox 3.0.10 Mac".

(Make sure that in your Profile on forums.quark.com you have chosen the "Enhanced" Editor (which is under "Site Options", item "Content Editor")

    Done. Enjoy!

    Matthias

P.S.: Not sure whether this has side effects, I couldn't find any.

Matthias. I tried this on Safari on my home Mac. Not working. I'll try it on my work Mac when I get the chance. The difference between Safari on my home and work Macs is that my home Mac doesn't have Quartz Extreme capability while my work Mac does. I'm betting that's the difference.

    Hi, Eric,

that's weird, as it is just JavaScript. Is JS accelerated by Quartz nowadays? Impressed...

Have you checked your profile settings? Do you use the Extended Editor?

Or maybe it is a Leopard/Tiger difference? You are still an old kitten, right? Wink

    Thanks

Matthias, finally had a chance to test this.My User Agent menu only goes up to v3.0.5 for Firefox (I have FF 3.0.10). Still doesn't work for me. No idea what the issue might be here.

Personally, now though, I'm looking at Opera 10 beta. Much faster!

    Re: Line Endings

Well, so far it's fast. The one drawback I have is that I can't click and hold the mouse button on a link and get a contextual menu. I'm usually surfing with one hand on the mouse and some sort of snack in my other hand so FF makes this easy that way.

In any case, I have to state that I have absolutely zero browser loyalty. Whatever is fastest or works the best for what I need. You can see in the following list what I have just on my home laptop:

    Sunrise.app
    Shiira.app
    Safari.app (4 beta)
    Opera.app (Opera 9)
    OmniWeb.app
    Netscape.app (version 7)
    Navigator.app (version 9)
    Mozilla.app
    Internet Explorer.app
    Camino.app
    Firefox 3.0 Beta 1.app
    Firefox.app (version 2)
    Firefox 3.app
Google Chrome.app (I got the beta a few hours after they released it. Alas, it's for Leopard users minimum)
    Opera_10 Beta.app

At work I also have iCab and Chimera (Chimera was Camino before they had to change the name), Flock and Seamonkey. Also Netscape v4 for OS9 (usually I use for testing purposes).

Oh, and to answer a previous question of yours. Yes, I am on Tiger. Not as happy with it as I thought I would be, but I like it better than Panther. I know a lot of people rave about Leopard, but I just haven't found anything to motivate me on it yet. Also, to install it on my home Mac, I'm going to need Leopard Assist. Anyway, sticking with Tiger for the time being.

Matthias, I blindly followed your instructions, and it works for me, But what have I actually done, can you explain to someone who doesn't understand what Develop> User Agent  means.

Eric, my G5 went fubar and needed a OSX10.4.11 System Re-install shortly after I installed Opera10 beta, I'm 99% sure it was just coincidence but I'll be sticking with v9 for connecting to our intranet MIS (which neither Safari3 or Firefox10 work with).[:'(]

    Re: Line Endings

    Hi, Glenn,

the user agent string is something how a website can detect what browser, platform, langauge etc you are running. Normally this is used to behave differently depending on the browsing environment a customer uses.

By changing the user agent you are pretending to use Firefox, that's all. It's like putting a Mercedes star on the hood of your BMW.

    More info here: http://developer.apple.com/safari/library/documentation/AppleApplications/Conceptual/Safari_Developer_Guide/UsingOtherDevelopMenuTools/UsingOtherDevelopMenuTools.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40007874-CH6-DontLinkElementID_9

    Does that explain it?

    Thanks
