    psd import suddenly stopped working

All of a sudden Quark (7) has stopped accepting psd imports, when it had been working fine for well over a year. I haven't intentionally changed any workflow either in Quark or in Photoshop. Photoshop files are being saved with previews, but for some reason now almost every time I import a psd with even the simplest layers -- no layer effects, alpha channels, curves, masking or anything complex -- I get a message that it has effects that Quark can't import, and displays it with the multi-language text blurbs claiming (falsely) that the file has no preview.

What's going on? Is this a Quark problem or a Photoshop problem? How might I make it work again? Would throwing away my preferences for one or the other application be likely to help, or just a waste of effort recreating all my preferences from scratch?

Can you open an old .psd and check the Save As settings are all the same as your current set up. Have you changed versions of Photoshop? Failing that, Quark's psd import XT had a major upgrade with v7.3, it may be worth re-installing quark, or replacing the XT and its prefs if you have a backup.

Re: psd import suddenly stopped working

I'm having trouble with PSD imports in v8. Sometimes, it works perfectly, other times Quark will hang for an age and eventually crash. Initially I thought it was something to do with PSDs saved from Photoshop CS4, but that seems not to be the case. The complexity of the Photoshop file also appears to make little difference. Sometimes a PSD with only one layer and NO effects or styles applied will crash Quark, and sometimes a really huge and complex file will work. There seems to be no rhyme or reason, which is why unfortunately I pretty much avaoid using PSD import lest it crash Quark. I sent a bug report, but I got an email back asking for me to collect for output and email to working files across. This was impossible as the files were over 200MB.

    Hi, chandlerbing,

if you cannot import PSDs at all anymore, then I would suspect the PSD Import XT is missing. Are you sure it is properly installed and loading?

    Hi, Easybourne,

Have you read the brochure at http://8.quark.com/cs_integration/ and watched the video? It explains a lot about Photoshop integration and how to make Photoshop files work with QuarkXPress.

I should have mentioned I'm on Quark 7.5. Yes, they import, but without a preview. So they don't do me much good. I notice now that psd files are being saved without icons or previews (even though I'm telling it to) so I can't see the images from the finder, either. I suspect it's time for a Photoshop re-install. I'll try that and see if it fixes things.

That seems to have fixed it. Problem solved.
