Importing grayscale photos from Photoshop CS4 to Quark 8

Mac user here - after a recent upgrade went from Photoshop CS3 and Quark 7 to Photoshop CS4 and Quark 8, but I still have old projects created with the old programs.

My problem is that in one of my projects created with the old versions, when I insert a newly-created grayscale image, the image is extremely flat. I change the levels in Photoshop, but it appears that Quark discards these changes.

What's more, when I print the page to my color printer, the photo appears as a big black box.

Can anyone help? I have tried changing my color management preferences to "QuarkXPress Emulate Legacy" but that hasn't done the trick.

     TIA

I hope replying to one's own question is acceptable - I contacted Quark and they gave me the answer, so I'd like to share for future reference Big Smile

If you import a grayscale image into a Quark project and it looks flat and prints as a black box, here is how to fix it:

    - Save the image as an EPS file and import it that way
    - When printing, change "Color" to "As Is" on the print dialog box

This is evidently a known issue when switching between different versions of Quark. The problem only occurs when importing a new image into a project started with a non-Quark 8 version.

Thanks for posting this. This could be a disaster if passing q7 native files to a Prepress dept using q8. What file format were you Saving your Grayscale before you changed to EPS?

We tried tiffs and jpegs, and neither worked - even with "As Is" selected.
