Text boxes from a qxd repositioned in Quarkxpress 7

    Hi everybody,

this most awkward thing is happening to me. I have some files in Quarkxpress 5 which I now open from my Quarkxpress 7.3 Passport, Windows version, and the text boxes are slightly skewed. I check the x and ys of their positions in both versions of Quarkxpress and they are exactly the same. However, in relation with the background position I have, their position is not the same.

To be more descriptive, I have maps as tiff images which are the background of a quark document. The quark, together with the map image, contains several text boxes, such as name of city, which are placed on top of the map to denote the info of the chart. What happens is that I open these qxds from my quarkxpress 7.3 and the text boxes are misplaced. What is even more puzzling is that, starting from top left of the document, the text boxes are fine but as I scroll right or down the misplacing of the text boxes gets worse. For instance, if on coordinates x=26mm and y=45mm the text box is correctly placed then on x=26mm and y=248 mm the text boxed is skewed approximately 10 clicks (hits on the arrow button) .

I suppose if the skewing was the same to all text boxes, I could measure the skew and move them all together, but it is not. It looks like the further I am from the top left of my document, the bigger the skewing

I would appreciate any thoughts on the above

I recall something along these lines posted here earlier, but I don't remember the specifics. I do have a question for you though. You are obviously using the metric system for your documents. But what happens if you change the system? For example, if you open the document in QXP5 and change the measurements (via preferences) to inches decimal and then save and then open the document in QXP7, what happens?

I'm asking because I'm just wondering if this is particular to the metric systm only or if it affect the others.

    Hi Erik,

thanks for your swift reply. I liked your thought, it was along my line of thinking as well. However, it didn't work. I actually tried every possible combination, inches and inches decimal, points, picas, ciceros etc. All of them produced the same result, the same skewness.

I also went to my computer, Control Panel and changed in "Regional Settings" the system to US instead of metric but still no change. I do suspect though there must be some sort of unit conversion issue. If you manage to remember that previous post you mentioned or where I should look for it, I would be grateful.

     Anyway, I appreciate your effort,

Hey Panos. Apparently the shifting I'm remembering had more to do with the contents of image boxes shifting. Here's a link to one of those posts. It may help - or not.

You might try appending the layout of these documents to a new QXP 7.x document or doing a thumbnail drag. That may take care of it. QXP 7.x has some issues with "legacy" documents and this is actually the suggested way of brining in older documents to QXP 7.x.

Since you are trying regional settings you might try inches/inches decimal with your keyboard set to US English. No idea if that will work or not. Other than that I'm kind of out of ideas.

Re: Text boxes from a qxd repositioned in Quarkxpress 7

    Hi  Erik,

I actually found the solution and I am writing it here in case anybody runs across something similar.

Apparently, the shifting of the text boxes was a false appearance. Whilst I was trying out things, I have printed my map and on the pdf was exactly as it should be. The text boxes were misplaced only on my screen. So, I deleted the map image from the picture box and I did an import picture on that map file. This time it was as it should on my screen as well. In other words, my whole post was a false alarm.

Anyway, thanks again, I hope in the future I will be able to reciprocate.

     Cheers,

     panos

Ahhh. It was probably the picture previews then. Deleting an image and then reimporting it replaces the preview. Considering these were legacy documents a thumnail drag or appending the layou would work too (as it correctly rebuilds the picture previews).
