Quark Express Version 5 Installation Questions.

Teaching for a local college, I was asked to teach a class in QuarkExpress 5.0. This was a few years ago as you can tell by the version number. Since I did not know it, the school gave me a copy of the software to load to my PC at home so that I could learn and practice with the software. There ae 3 disc involved: Disk 1: Server Install; DIsk 2- Application CD; and Disk 3: Updater CD. In addition to the disk, I was given the Serial Number and the Validation code.

I recently upgraded hardware on my PC. Therefore I had to reload everything. I tried reloading QuarkExpress 5. This is what I did: I did NOT use Disk-1. I installed Disk-2 and Disk-3. entering the Validation Code and Regisration Number (Serial #) when asked. It looks like it was installed but when I double click on the exe file, the Splash screen comes up, then I will get a QuarkExpress (tm) message-"Can not connect to Quark License Aministrator. The Server is not responding [4113]."

Can anyone help me out to get this version working on my Stand-Alone PC? I am using Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3.

    Thank You,

    Sam

    Hi, Sam,

it looks like you have an instance of a multi-seat site license installed on your machine. In case you still belong to the organisation, you need to connect to the QLA (license server) your organisation/school has installed. You can then check out a license so that you do not need to be connected to them all the time.

If you do not belong to the organisation/school anymore, then you need to purchase a license. If you are still a teacher (or student) then you can benefit from the special offer we have for education: http://www.quark.com/education/pricing.html

If you are not eligible for an educational license (but do own a pervious license of QuarkXPress), then this offer might be interesting for you:

Re: Quark Express Version 5 Installation Questions.

I tried re-installing this time using Disk-1. I executed QLA ServerInstall, NOT QLA ClentInstall.exe. I'm not sure what one I use? REloaded Disk-2 and Disk-3. Have the same result.

I was just on the Chat room with support. The person would NOT give me instructions on how to do it but to quote them "There is no need to install a server copy if you are not connected the server."

I explained and actually copy my original post to this thread and sent it to the tech. He seems to be indication that because my system is a stand-alone, I can install QuarkExpress V 5 as a stand-alone piece of software and not worry about a server?

If anyone can help and tell mewhat to do, I would appreciate it.

    Thank You,

    Sam

Sam, I'd go with what Matthias has already mentioned. Matthias is one of the Quark engineers/managers who designs/tests QuarkXPress. I'm pretty sure he knows just about everything about the code.

     Erik:

OMG, I hope I didn't give the impression that I was doubting Matthias. If I did I apologize to him. The whole situation bothers me. It was working fine before my hardware crash. I installed the software about 3 years ago. I reloaded my system with the same operating system (Windows XP Professional SP3) that I had prior. Why would it work before the crash and not after? I'm doing something wrong or different.

Thank you for the flowers, Erik. Big Smile

Actually I know nothing of the code. I am a user like you (even before I joined Quark) plus I helped design a few features of Quark's products.

    Hi, Sam,

    Samcec:
I installed the software about 3 years ago. Why would it work before the crash and not after? I'm doing something wrong or different.

the validaton code (VC) you enter decides whether the instance of QuarkXPress you are installing is going to be a time-bombed copy, an educational version, an NFR, a single-user copy, a site license or a multi-activation copy. In newer versions of QuarkXPress the VC even determines which languages get installed.

My point is that there's no difference in software, it is all in the VC. So maybe you are using a different VC than before?

The other possibility is that you had a site-license (QLA bound) installed and checked out a license (I think the Admin can allow up to 9,999 days or so). Now that you reinstalled, the checked-out licence is deleted and you need to connect to the QLA (license server) again.

If this (QLA-bound license) is your license (or you are sure you have another single license), then please call our Customer Service and they can help you reactivate the license, e.g. if you registered it back then.

If that's also not it, can we make you a compelling offer?

    Thanks
    Matthias

No worries. I don't think Matthias takes it personally. He's a nice guy. In any case, the only thing I can think of is that perhaps the school you used to work at gave you an unexpiring checked out license (QLA can do that for laptops/machines that are expected to be off network for lengthy periods of time). Perhaps the reinstall wiped the license. Perhaps the serial and validation code you were given was coded to the school's QLA? I don't know. I'm just guessing here. Obviously the install assumes you are a client QLA user and the fact that you have both a server and client disk I think confirms that. A retail CD is only one disk.

There may be some others who know more (including Matthias). Sorry I can't be of more help. I've never used QLA so I'm not very versed on those particular issues.

I know your time zone well, as Denver is also Mountain Standard Time. They often keep me awake late...

However I read somewhere that Arizona doesn't observe Summer time ("daylight savings time" in US English). Is that's why it is 9 hours?

That is correct! Our clocks do not change. The rest of the nation (except for Hawaii I believe) goes through the Fall back in the Fall and Spring forward in the Spring routine. We don't. Right now Pacific Time shares the same time as us. In winter it will be Mountain Time again.

I should mention though that the Indian reservations (Native Americans) DO change their clocks. Technically, the reservations are federal land and the government observes DST, so the reservations follow.

Re: Quark Express Version 5 Installation Questions.

Matthias: I very much appreciate your insight. I would like to ask you a couple questions:

    1. When I received the software (several years ago) I was given the Validation Code. Earlier this week, talking on Chat, the tech gave me another VC. If I sent both of them to you, would you be able to tell me what one I could use? Maybe the older one is for a Server and the newer one is for a stand-alone client version.

    2. I mentioned the 3 disk I have.  On Disk-1, there are License exe's call  ServerInstal.exe and ClientInstall.exe. Trying to install this software to my PC (I don't want to be connected to the Server), remember I want a Stand-Alone environment, do I need to execute either one of those exe's?

I don't mean to be repeating things I've said before and asking you to repeat your replies. I hope I am not doing that. I'm just trying to try all avenues to get this installed. If I'm dead in the water, I can accept that. Please just tell me.

I would love to get the latest version but the product is expensive. I am retired and on a fixed income. I am the "chair" of my 50th year high school committee and every month or two, I write the alumni a newscript telling them what is going on. I used my version of Quark Express.

Re: Quark Express Version 5 Installation Questions.

    Hi, Sam,

I do not have access to our Validation Code systems, so I have to ask you to call customer service (or use Chat) to find out which VC does what.

If you have a disk where you can install a QLA, then I assume you have a QLA-bound license and you need to install a QLA and configure yourself a license file (online on our website) after logging on. How that works is also something CS/TS can tell you, so please call them.

If you don't get further, then please let me know and I'll try to help.

    Thanks
    Matthias
