    The Application ProfileAgent Quit Unexpectedly

I get a message window that pops up stating, "The Application ProfileAgent Quit Unexpectedly." when saving documents in QuarkXPress 7.5 on a G4 MDD PPC, 1GB Ram. I don't know what may be causing this and have asked Insider Software regarding FontAgent Pro 4 handling my QuarkXPress 7.5 fonts and documents when saving. I have also clicked on the "Report" button and sent it to Apple but have not heard back from them. I do not know if it is a MacOSX 10.4.11 issue, a QuarkXPress 7.5 issue or a FontAgent Pro 4 plug-in error. The pop-up "Quit" message window only occurs when saving my Quark documents. It is rather annoying when saving documents and this window pops up numerous times, making me click continue or report to finally make it go away. On a 20-page document I may have to click "Continue" 120 times before it goes away and does not repeatedly pop up again and again. Does not cause corruption of the document file and opens back up correctly updated. Odd. Any suggestions would be appreciated in helping to track down this gremlin. Thank you for your time and consideration, Ted

Oh dear, Ted. I think we've all been down this path at sometime in our lives and I would say firstly, that your G4 with just 1 GB ram isn't up to the job by today's standards. On a personal note, I've never been very successful with any of the Font Management systems and even today on a "state of the art" Mac, I still don't use Font Management. I do have 4Gb on board which at a minimum, 2 will suffice but that's on an Intel..... Without wanting to sound too negative, I'd forget the Font Programme and place the fonts, your using, in Users> your name> Library> fonts. BUT before you do that, check out your fonts first. It sounds to me like you could be using Post Script and/or TTFs. Corrupts fonts are the obvious flaw in your argument and crashes used to be commonplace on pre-Intel Macs. As a suggestion, try and stick to one type of font only in your document and see how you get on. I feel this is the area in which you should be looking.... Good luck.

Respectfully I must disagree somewhat with this statement. Sure, if this G4 was being used to produce a high end magazine or as a production machine for movies and whatnot I'd say you are right. But the second Mac we have here where I work get's along just fine.

Powermac G4/450 AGP, 984mb RAM. My own Mac was used for the same production work for a one year period and it did the job well and it's a laptop (Powerbook G4/400 384mb of RAM at that time).

I think it just depends on what you're using it for.

Re: The Application ProfileAgent Quit Unexpectedly

I received this suggestion from Chad at Insider Software regarding my problem using their FontAgent Pro 4 font management program... There could be a couple reasons you are having this problem. Below are a list of solutions, starting with the best possible fix, then to the next fix and so on. -Close out of Quark. -Open FontAgent Pro, then click on "FontAgent Pro" to the left of the Apple. -Click "Install/Plugins and Extensions", Next too The QuarkXpress 7.4 click on the "Reveal" button. -Open the Extensions folder and locate the FontAgent Pro Plugin and trash it. -Then go back to the "Install/Plugins Extensions" and install the plugin again. - Restart computer and see if this has resolved the issue. If not continue to next step. You need to clear your font caches. To clear your font caches you can download our new utility, Smasher 1.6 . The demo will allow you to clear your OS X caches for free. If you register Smasher you will be able to quickly clear your Adobe, MS Office and Quark font caches. If you don't purchase Smasher, you can clear your Adobe caches by closing your Adobe apps and performing a search for "adobefnt". Trash the results that end in .lst. Those are the Adobe font caches. Here are the instructions for Quark 7.5 /Applications/QuarkXpress 7.x/Preferences/jaws/FontStubs/ (the folder gets trashed) Then restart computer. ___________________ I did everything he suggested, as I already had Smasher, but to no avail. Nothing has been able to alleviate these pop-up windows, so far. Am waiting for his response to see what other suggestions he might have.

Re: The Application ProfileAgent Quit Unexpectedly

I sent this report to Chad at Insider Software.... I have noticed that if I don't click the "Close" or "Report" buttons on the pop-up window, as the "pointer spinning ball" continues to save the document and then reverts back to the pointer again, I can click the "Close" button noted and it goes away with my file saved properly. However, if I immediately click one of those two buttons while Quak is saving the document, the message pop-up window continues to appear over and over again every time I click it. On a large document, if one immediately clicks on one of those buttons, there could be 120 pop-ups. Fortunately, if one waits until the "Save or spinning ball" is completed, and one then clicks on the "Close" button, it goes away, but if you click on the "Report" button, however many pop-up windows appeared will stay on the screen for your action. Could get very crowded, indeed!
