Hi, eadoherty,
ISO 8859-4 contains the a with a macron, maybe searching for that (or contacting a font vendor with that information helps)? You might want to check East European fonts too, as the macron is often used in the Baltics.
If you find no suitable font, either construct the letter (in 6) or upgrade to 7 or 8.
May I ask why upgrading is no option? Remember that working with a mixed environment (different QuarkXPress versions) has a huge risk of creating unwanted effects!
If you own the license of 7, you can dual install that at home and on your work machine. If it is your employer's license, ask to check out a license to take home. In both cases there wouldn't even be a cost associated with upgrading your workflow.
If both is not possible and you use a macron often, the upgrade price might be well worth it.
For the € sign, Adobe provides a free Euro font on their website.
Best
