    Quark 4

Can someone tell me if the download page for quark 4 update to 4.1 is still available on Quarks website, as I cant find it anymore.

Have quark stopped supporting version 4?

    Thanks

They have stopped supporting v6 (though updaters are still availbale from their Website)… not to mention v4.

This said you can contact them and ask wether they'd have the updater you need somewhere in their computers. I myself probably have kept that updater but I used to run QuarkXPress Passport. Don't know if you have the same.

Thanks for your reply, but I still cant seem to find it on here, I'll continue to look.

Its for quark 4 on pc unfortunately, and its extremly unstable without the 4.1 update and my company are reluctant to upgrade to a newer version.

    Thanks

I meant to say contact them by phone (it's toll free). They'll certainly tell you wether they still have it somewhere or not. They might even send it to you via e-mail. Don't know.

    Quark 4.1

Wondering if you can help me with Quark 4.1 problem too. I have very old laptop running OS 8.6 (!) and Quark 4.1. When I try to copy an old document to a flash drive, all supporting files (photos/logos etc) copy except the Quark document (which just goes "missing" on the flash drive). I tried adding .qxd extension but did not help. Any ideas on how to get this to copy... I am trying to transfer it to my new IMAC (running OS 10.5.8) to burn to a CD but OSX doesn't recognize the file (even though I do have Quark Passport loaded on that computer). I think this is OSX related because another old(ish) laptop running OS 10.3.9 won't recognize it either.

    Re: Quark 4.1

By "missing" do you mean you copy it to the flash drive and then it just dissapears (like you never copied it over), or do you mean the file copies and you can then copy it to the iMac, but you can't open it because it's not recognized?

If it's the latter what you want to do is add the .qxd extension, but don't double-click to open the file. Open Passport and then go to File>Open, locate the file and then open.

If you mean it dissapears when you copy the file to the flash drive you might try zipping the file and then unzipping it on the iMac.

Lastly, if you have not already done so, I would tell OSX to associate files ending in .qxd with Passport. You can do this by selecting one of these XPress documents, Getting Info and then changing the Open With popup menu to Passport. Click "Change All" and then "OK" and you're set.

I suspect that what is happening here is that you have a FAT32 formatted flash drive (most of them are). FAT32 won't support Apple HFS+ (the system Apple drives are formatted in). So when you copy to the flash drive all the data that tells the Mac what program to open the file with is stripped out and you are left with just the data. That's why you need to add the extension and open the file from inside the program. Doing so and then saving reassociates the file back with the program (Getting Info and changing the program to open the file with does too).

     Hope that helps.

     Hello Jean-Marie,

    Jean-Marie Schwartz:

I myself probably have kept that updater but I used to run QuarkXPress Passport. Don't know if you have the same.

In connection with your very kind offer to help the original poster re updating to to QuarkXPress Passport 4.1.1, I'm turning to you with my own plea for assistance.

Our local high school had not used QuarkXPress Passport for several years, when QuarkXPress Passport was at verson 4.1.   Now they need to run it on the old G3 upgraded to a G4 by means of a ZIF CPU Powerlogix upgrade under Mac OS 9.2.2.  QuarkXPress Passport 4.1 runs just fine of the machine.

I was able to locate a QuarkXPress 4.1.1 updater for the Mac on a web site (system7today.com), without an indication of its being specific to the Passport version.  The name of that updater file is quark411us.hqx and it expands into a folder called mxu411us, which in turn contains a folder labeled QuarkXPress US, inside wich is the "QuarkXPress™ US 4.11 Updater".  However, when I run it, the progress bar goes up to about 75%, then stops and after a few seconds an error message tells me that this is not an upgradable version (or words to that effect).  It seems I have the wrong updater. I do have the ADB Quark dongle installed, of course.

If you could point me to the correct QuarkXPress Passport 4.1.1 or share your updater with me, that would be wonderful.  It's not on theQuark web site and, of course, not supported by Quark any longer.  They can't even supply me with a USB dongle, that's why we have to run it on the old machine.

     Please let me know.

    Thanks in advance.

Does anybody have a copy of the QuarkXPress Passport 4.1.1 updater for the Mac?  It's no longer on the Quark web site, and Quark no longer supports it.

    Thanks in advance.

Yep but this doesn't mean they don't have the updater available any more, does it?

Have you phoned or e-mailed Quark?

Thank you for replying, Jean Marie.

Yes, I have been on the phone with Quark, explained the situation to them and they just blew me off by repeating over and over that they don't support such an old version and that means that they do not offer any support for it, including sharing any legacy software they may have, such as an updater.

Time for me to give up, I guess.  :-(

Thank you for the courtesy of your reply.

    Re: Quark 4

I can't say I'm surprised; I doubt very much there is any comprehensive version archive that support could access, and given all the changes at Quark and the number of versions, I'm not sure how easily anyone there could lay hands on that file.

I used Passport 4.1 for testing, and I'm sure I had that file at some time, and due to all the development and QA I've been associated with I have a pretty big archive. But I flipped through about 50 likely CDs this AM, and took a look at a half dozen, and no luck. I'd say there are decent odds that it exists somewhere in my office, but with hundreds of CD and DVD backups lying around, if it isn't in the obvious ones it gets hard to know where to look.

Your best hope is that someone who has maintained a good internal archive for their own use will notice this and know they have the file within reach, but even as long as many folks got by on Classic this is still a tough item to pull up these days. Maybe someone will still come through, though. Good luck.
