trying to upgrade, told validation code and serial code do not match

after reading a lot of forum info here, i must have been "lucky" to be able to use Quark 7.0 on my iMac. I upgraded from a G4 and used migration assistant to move applications, etc. to the new computer.  I did some work on Quark 7 files for a couple of days with no problem. Suddenly i started getting the "error" sound when trying to type in a type size in the measurements palette. The only way I can change any specs is to use the pre-set tools, or to change fonts, run through the whole list of fonts.  Any attempt to type in specs gets the "error" sound.

I read that Q 7.3 was the version for Intel Macs so I tried to upgrade.  After downloading the upgrades, i kept getting "it cannot be recognized" error messages when clicking on the dmg icons for various versions of Quark from 7.1 - 7.5.

okay,  going back to basics and used a 7.01 CD to upgrade version by version. Typing in the Validation Code and then the serial number gives me the message that they donʻt match. When browsing for a version of Quark to upgrade, it says itʻs not a valid version of Quark 7.

On the G4 I was using Quark 7.3. I donʻt know why the iMac only has 7.0 on it.  Should I trash all my Quark files on the iMac and re-install 7? I have the feeling I will still have a problem with the "validation and serial numbers not matching" error and how will it affect my usage license?

     thanks for any help,

    candice

Candice, I'm a little confused. So let me relate it as I understand it and you can correct me if I'm off.

So, you had a G4 and you upgraded to a new iMac? You used Migration Assistant to transfer your personal files and applications to the new Mac? The version of XPress that got transferred to the new iMac was 7.3? It worked for you for a few days on the new iMac and then you started getting errors? So you downloaded various versions of the 7.x installers, but was not successful in opening the disk images because of errors?

Now we get to the part I am confused on. You used the 7.01 CD to upgrade version by version? From what version to what version to what version? Later you mention that the iMac has only version 7.0 on it? How did you get version 7.0 on the iMac if you had transferred 7.3?

Can you explain this a little more?

In the meantime if you really do want to try uninstalling and starting over, I'd suggest deauthorizing XPress first. At the moment I don't remember which menu this is in, but you want to Transfer the license. That will deauthorize the app on the Mac it is on and allow you to install it on a different Mac. You can then delete the app and the following folders/files: Library>Preferences>Quark and ~username>Library>Preferences>Quark>Quark 7.0. You probably did not do this with the G4 and when you copied over the app through Migration Assistant the program eventually became confused (when you activate, the program imprints the computer and the hardware it was installed on). Also note that even though the app folder may say 7.0, the app itself can be a higher version.

Finally, if you have no joy, call Quark Customer Service. They can send you via email a new validation number that will work.

Re: trying to upgrade, told validation code and serial code do not match

Itʻs been a few months since i got the iMac but i only started using Quark for a certain job recently.

When i started having problems,  i started looking into my Quark version more closely. Apparently Migration Assistant didnʻt move 7.3 but only the basic version of Quark. Either that or I did a fresh install of Quark 7 on the iMac, but i canʻt remember the sequence of events since April. Per the "about Quark,"  the iMac has 7.0    "About Quark" on the G4 says itʻs 7.3.

Upgrading the iMac didnʻt work due to the Warning: unrecognizable. Thatʻs when I tried to use the 7.01 CD to upgrade the iMacʻs 7.0 but ran into the serial/validation problem.

I was reading about the License transfer earlier but the person talking about it said it was available from version 7.2 meaning iʻd have to deauthorize it like you said on the G4.  If I deleted it from the iMac (since I think itʻs 7.0) would I still not be able to install Quark 7 from the CD?  I cannot find the License Transfer on the iMac version of Quark 7, but itʻs there on the G4, in version 7.3.

Whatʻs confusing is that I understood Quark 7 license was good for 2 computers. Even if I did a fresh install when I first got the iMac, why canʻt I upgrade it?  Iʻm afraid to delete it from the G4 because it works and can be used on that computer if needed. I would hate to have it not working on either computer...  call me paranoid?

OK. So there is some confusion as to how 7.0 got on to the iMac and not 7.3. Try this.

    1. Move the entire QuarkXPress application folder on to your desktop. ZIP it and put it somewhere safe then delete the folder (not the ZIP file).

    2. Copy the entire QuarkXPress application folder from the G4 to your iMac. You'll probably have to network them since the G4 is going to be PPC and the iMac will be Intel.

    3. Place the folder you copied over into the Applications folder on the iMac.

    4. Open that folder and find the following folder inside: For System. Inside that folder will be this app: QuarkXPress Components

    5. Double-click on QuarkXPress Components. Let it reinstall the components.

    6. Delete the following folder Library>Preferences>Quark. This will delete any activation information

    7. Delete the following folder ~username>Library>Preferences>Quark>Quark 7.0. This will delete all preferences.

    8. Restart your Mac.

    9. Restart the QuarkXPress application. You will be asked to activate your copy of XPress again. Do so and you should be good.

At this point you should be at 7.3 (which was copied from the G4). If you want to update to 7.5 then you can do that. The issue of unreadable DMGs sounds to me like the download is not completeing (I've had that happen with slow DSL connections).

    Hope that helps.

Re: trying to upgrade, told validation code and serial code do not match

You are amazing!  I did all as you advised and it went well until i tried to start Quark 7.3. It said "The activation file for this copy of QuarkXPress has been corrupted. You will need to reinstall this copy of QuarkXPress.

when I clicked OK, another window came up which said: QuarkXPress cannot be launched because one or more software components needed by the applicaiton are missing or damaged. Press "more info"....  so I did and the Component Status window had Color Manager.qrc  with an exclamation point and Load Error for the status.

i tried to copy over that one component from my G4 again but it again came up as damaged or corrupt. i tried launching Q from my G4 via target mode but it had the same error message as the iMac regarding missing/damaged components.

I opened the archived copy of Quark and moved the Color Manager.qrc to replace the one in the Apps folder and tried to launch and it still had the

i inserted the Quark 7 install disk to see if i could get to the point of seeing the different parts of the program but again couldnʻt get beyond the serial / validation not matching problem.

But when i reboot the G4 and open a Quark file, it has no problem.

Thanks for all your help--maybe itʻs time to call Quark?

Did you delete the Quark folder at Library>Preferences>Quark? That folder holds the activation information (even though it tells you there is nothing in there. QuarkXPress will only give you that activation error if the folder still exists. You'll also want to make sure the G4 is NOT connected in any way to the iMac when you start XPress (after this folder is deleted).

As to the Color Manager component, that's in the Required Components folder of the QuarkXPress applications folder. You might want to try copying it over from the G4 again. If you get info on it, the version of it should match as closely to the version of have as possible - I think. I have 7.5 and mine is telling me it's 7.31, which means they (Quark) did not update it between versions.

Failing all that, yeah, give Quark a call.

EDIT: You might try this for the Color Manager component. It's from the Knowledge Base.

Re: trying to upgrade, told validation code and serial code do not match

yes, i deleted the Library Preferences Quark folder, and it did say it was empty.

I did try to copy the Color Manager component from the G4 again, and from the archived Quark folder that i put elsewhere on the iMac.  The 7.3 versions that were copied from the G4 all had the same date but the one from the archieved Quark folder was newer  since i just got the iMac.

i tried out the Color Manager info from the Knowledge Base. i did the first part Solution 1 which didnʻt work. I got to #2-3 of the second part and tried to launch Quark. it took me to the Activation needed window so i hit the activate automatically using internet.  it got hung up during the "checking for Internet connectivity" and got the "connection failed, check network settings and try again," plus the missing/damaged component message again..  i just tried launching again and it appears to be hanging up in the same place with the same activation failure and damaged component message.

the bottom line of the knowledge base is to reinstall Quark but i will try tech support because the serial/validation issue hasnʻt been settled.

Thank you for all your helpful suggestions...

Re: trying to upgrade, told validation code and serial code do not match

hello--wanted to say thanks again and all is fine now.  i had an ah-ha moment and feel like an idiot for not realizing it earlier-- the serial number isnʻt the one for Quark 7 but the one for my old Quark 6 program. Now the validation code and serial number match.  But to avoid the color manager.qrc problem using the Knowledge Base, i followed all instructions down to uninstalling Quark 7.  i ended up doing exactly as you suggested once the code and serial number matched.  i transferred the license from the G4 and installed Q7 from the CD and updated it once straight to 7.5.  no problem with typing in specs into the measurements palette and am a happy camper again...

Re: trying to upgrade, told validation code and serial code do not match

Candice. Excellent. I am glad it all worked out. Just to refer back to a point you mentioned earlier, you are correct in that Quark allows two instances of one license to run on two machines. Usually it's a laptop and a desktop, but the license does not specify that this must be so. The important part is that the program is running on one machine only at any given time.

So, you could probably reactive on the G4 if you needed to. I was just suggesting deauthorizing so that there was no confusion with Quark's servers about what computer had what license.

In any case I am happy everything is working.
