Angry [:@] .xic Files - beware!

Today saw my first major crash in XP8.1. Never had one in 8.01 or 8.02 so I can probably hasten a guess as to this being a bug. While writing a PDF for an 8pp newsletter, the application unexpectedly quit leaving half the file unwritten. When I re-opened the file (the one that was automatically saved) and repeated the export pdf process I was prompted by the Usage box telling me there were files missing or updated. When I checked this out I came across a large number of "Partialimage.xic" files which were all missing (see image). Everytime looked for these files or tried to update the application hung, wheel of death spun and eventually quit. I tried a workround to copy and paste all the information from my original document into a new clean document and then, repeat the process but the missing files are still showing. So, with the guides on and noticing an extraordinary amount of extra lines, I had to trawl them and delete these 'newly made boxes'. The only thing I can think that this is down to is transparency on the images/frames as the only thing it has happened to is these. For info, there has been a post before but surprisingly, nobody's replied: http://forums.quark.com/p/7894/33246.aspx My questions are 1) What are these files? 2) Where are these files because I couldn't find them 'anywhere' on the mac and 3) What happens if this happens again - is there a workround or do I have to 'be careful' and then delete all these extra boxes???? Beware people!!

Confirmed - multiple images with drop shadow and various rotated angles used in the new 'Item Styles' palette created a new set of images after a crash. Deletion of all these 'new images' fixed but still a worry to future effects.

I would not be concerned about those .xic files.

They were generated during the flattening stage of export to PDF.

Normally they are cleaned up, but the crash prevented that.

They are built in your user temp folder so they should get flushed away next time you reboot.

There are bazoodles of folders in the unix underbelly of OSX that are not part of the Finder search path, so that might go some way to explain what you are seeing.

Thanks Graham - at least the solution is now on the forum.

"When I print a Quarkdocument to postscriptfiles and do a force quit - because cancel printing doesn’t work - all (links to) images on that current page are gone.

Why does Quark change a document on a force quit?"

Hi, i had some trouble printing my document today. Instant-Crash after Print-Dialog. I too noticed the strange CIV-Files in my doc, pointing to a sytemtemp-folder.
After deliting this empty box, the document stratet printing again, everything is fine now.

    BUT:
this was not the first time, and i want to know howthis comes about and how I can avoid your flaw. Its TERRIBLY BAD to change something in the background in my document just for printing, when its not safe and user-data gets LOST!
Why the heck not duplicate the doc or duplicate the picturelink-list in a axtra file for printing...

This is one of those error I highly recommend to fix asap.

The best option you have in this case is export to a PDF with "Native Transparency" turned ON.

Since flattening will not happen, the document will not be affected. You may then print the PDF directly to the printer.

    Re: .xic Files - beware!

So thats your workaround to make printing safe?? How userfriendly is that, to generate a pdf before and printing that?

At least make a Print-Safe-Option (Checkbox or something) that internally generates a non-flattened pdf in the background, then printing it. Not to hassle me with this inconvinient way just to keep my picturedata unchanged after crash...
