Quark 8 does not print to pdf under leopard

My company just recently upgraded al macs to 10.5.8. Now Quark 8.0.2 would not print to pdf any more, i.e. it looks like as if it would print but then the pdf printer just flushes the job without any warning and no pdf is produced.

I tried the upgrade to Quark 8.1 but to no avail. Printing to PDF looks fine at the beginning but then the print job just disappears in a black hole again. I also upgraded to Acrobat 9 and Adobe PDF 9.0 but still the same result.

Saving a ps file and distilling manually works fine but I really would need a fix for printing directly to PDF. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Quark 8 does not print to pdf under leopard

I just figured out the solution myself. Although it says that the CUPS FIlter is included in the Quark 8.1 update I nevertheless downloaded the Quark CUPS Filter 1.0.1 installer from http://downloads.quark.com/Details.aspx?fid=117& and used it to:

1 Deinstall theQuark CUPS Filter, reboot and then

2 Install the Quark CUPS Filter with the same installer and reboot

Everything works like a charm now with both Adobe PDF 8.0 and 9.0. Hope this might be useful to othes with the same problem.

Just as a heads up, it seems that Adobe's PDF Printer will not work under Snow Leopard anymore:

    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html

You will need to "Save as Adobe PDF" from OS X's print dialog.

Hi is there a walk through of how to create pdfs using quark 7and/or8  using Acrobat 9 in Snow leopard?...

I’m have great difficulty under standing how to input initial parameters i.e. page size, bleed colour etc. ahead of clicking on the ”Save as Adobe PDF” and out putting a pdf.

    Thanks

Neither does QXP 6.5 The CUPS filter patch is only good for versions 7 & 8. Come on Quark!

    Hi, Jeremy,

there is a best practise document available from Quark on how to create good PDF: http://8.quark.com/pdfs/QXP8_PDFBestPractices.pdf

You might also visit a 3rd party website like GWG: http://www.gwg.org

When you use "PDF Export" a lot of the mistakes you might make can be avoided (no need to specify a page size or a correct PPD). You can set PDF Export to use Acrobat instead of the built-in libraries if you prefer Acrobat over Global Graphics.

For Acrobat parameters please visit Adobe's website or help system.

Remember that under Snow Leopard Adobe doesn't offer PDF Printer functionality anymore (so it doesn't appear as a printer anymore), you need to use the "Save as Adobe PDF" popup entry. Visit Adobe's website for reason: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html

Re: Quark 8 does not print to pdf under leopard

Hi, i'm havin HUGE problemsafter installing Snow Leopard. As you say, Adobe PDF printer is no longer available, and the Print/Save as Adobe PDF automator function DOESNT WORK at all... Get an error that says that Cant Find XPress Prefs.

The way I do it is File/Export as PDF, but that way it generates a PDF 6 times bigger than with the Adobe PDF Printer, making it unbearable to upload via FTP (1GB for 50 A4 pages)

Is Quark working on a NEW Quark CUPS filter?

Any help will be VERY WELCOME

    TIA

The Adobe PDF Printer is not a product from Quark but from Adobe, so please contact Adobe for issues with it.

When you create a PDF via PDF Export, please make sure you use similar options that you would use in Acrobat, especially compression. If possible use an "Automatic ZIP/JPEG low" compression and downsample your pictures to a reasonable resolution (e.g. 225 or 300 dpi).

Alternatively you can set the PDF Export to create PostScript which you then can convert to PDF using Distiller. For that go to the Preference section "Application > PDF" and set the option to "Create PostScript for later distilling". To make this more comfortable, specify a Distiller watched folder and you get your PDF automatically.

    Thanks for your fast reply...

Quark found a solution on Leopard launching Quark Cups... Why not upgrading it to work on snow leopard? Cause i get the same problem I had then... No pdf file is generated...

I've done my reading and as I understand that has to do with the CUPS printing sys used by apple, and it's like a privileges thingy...

Re: Quark 8 does not print to pdf under leopard

    Hi, Mike,

the CUPS patch is built-into QuarkXPress 8.1 (and higher).

What Acrobat Distiller version are you using?

We can't fix the Adobe PDF Printer not being a printer, that's something between Apple and Adobe, please see here:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html

Nevertheless it should create a PDF (when you use the 'Save as Adobe PDF' menu), if not, I would check first whether it works from other applications.

    Thanks

Re: Quark 8 does not print to pdf under leopard

     Hi,

I have latest Adobe CS 4 (Acrobat Pro 9.2.0 and Distiller 9.2.0) and when i do the thing (cmd+p/ hit "printer..." / PDF / Save As Adobe PDF / redirect to cmd+p menu / hit 'print') I got an error: Cannot access the "Xpress Preferences" file [12]... So no file is generated

Also, I built my own Print Styles but when i select cmd+p/ hit "printer..." / PDF / Save As Adobe PDF / I'm redirected to cmd+p menu and lose my output print styles...

I can Save As Adobe PDF in other apps like firefox, openoffice, etc.

I dont have a deafault printer on the print/fax menu, only a scanner, since my PDF Printer is gone.

BTW: I opened Distiller and got this error on the log window, dont know if it has something to do with it...

Re: Quark 8 does not print to pdf under leopard

I have upgraded my OS to Snow Leopard but am still in Quark 6.1. It seems Snow Leopard won't allow me to make a PDF either. I have tried the Print to PDF and DO get one that way, but the .eps images are all low resolution and I can't find anywhere that would be causing this. This is very frustrating. When I try to use Quark to export to PDF or .ps file it seems to go fine and then Quark stops responding and gets "stuck". I am usually pretty good at finding alternate ways to get PDFs out, but I am really at a loss now. Everything I have tried doesn't work.

Re: Quark 8 does not print to pdf under leopard

Quark 6 isn't supported on Snow leopard, getting it to run is further than most people get. You'll need quark v8 or v9 to run properly with Snow Leopard. You can try the tips in the above thread to Print to Adobe PDF which is different to Print to PDF, or try to print to a Postscript file and drag that onto Distiller. the fact that EPS are coming out low res may be down to Snow leopard only using the preview part of the eps, snow Leopard has issues with resource forks on old files.
