Problem with text overlapping in display with QXP8.1

Sometimes when I am moving text around I have to delete the carriage return break in order to tighten up text.

This happens mostly when I get stuff written on a page formatted with three columns of text and I am importing the text into a page with only two columns, or vice versa, or when I copy-paste out of PDFs into QXP8.1.

I don't recall it being an issue with QXP8.

Instead of jumping up one line to fill in after the Return, the text below the break moves all of the way up the page and appears over top of the previously typed text so I have a jumble of text on top of text.

Popping the space bar a few times usually straightens the text.

If I could add a couple of images here they would be of a page of text in clear with a return in the middle of a line .... and then a picture of what happens when I remove the return, which is the text below the break all piled up on top of the text above it.

I have them here on my Desktop...

    Any ideas ??

    Binky

If you post some screenshots on a hosting website like http://www.pixentral.com/ you can add links to those images here on the Quark forum.

And if you can reproduce this problem, try checking the leading and space before and after of the text on either side of these paragraph returns you are deleting.

If you have a GMail account you can also create a site and then post your pics to the site. Get the html code for that pic from your site and then embed it in to the page here. Or use mig's suggestion.

Do I understand correctly that in the first image you placed the text cursor between the words Acclivity and anounced and then added a paragraph return? If that's all you did, I'm not sure how you got the text in the second screen shot. Is there just one text box on the page? Are you using a paragraph style? It looks like you could use one style for all of the text below the Account Edge for Mac headline. If you apply the style while holding the option key to strip out any local formatting before adding the paragraph return, does it still do that?

    Hi, Binky,

I have never seen something like what your screenshots are showing, however I have seen a similar bug which had overlapping lines. Helas, this bug was fixed in 8.1.

The one I saw only happened with type-1 fonts and only when the font had extreme kerning pairs with hyphens (e.g. -50 up to -1000).

    Three things please:
    1. Please send us the document (collect for output with fonts)
    2. Have a look at your font whether you see the above mentioned pre-requisites.
    3. Does this happen with "fresh" 8.1 documents too?

    Thanks

Re: Problem with text overlapping in display with QXP8.1

I created a new document and could not duplicate the glitch... So I opened up the document I was working on before and tried it . With the original problem document I had no trouble duplicating the problem. When I put the insertion point into a line of text which is centrally justified and type in some additional text the text flows upwards over top of the text already there and overlaps it.

I will export this document to PDF in a few days and try to forget about it ! For the play-by-play see:

In the first picture I have the words "Article Submitted Ridgecrest Apple..." and decided to insert the name of the author between Submitted & Ridgecrest...

I placed the insertion point after Submitted & started typing in "by Cyrus Roton."

All is good until I finish his name and as soon as I typed the last letter of his name... suddenly the text flowed upwards...

Hitting the Spacebar corrects the text flow and leaves the text as I wanted it. See the last picture.

Re: Problem with text overlapping in display with QXP8.1

First off, I'd use line breaks (soft returns) instead of paragraph returns (hard returns) in several places. For example, the first three lines in larger type could all be one paragraph with line breaks instead of three paragraphs. A line break is made by holding shift while hitting return. It forces text to the next line while keeping it in the same paragraph.

I would treat the following three lines (from your final screenshot beginning with Article and ending with .net) the same way. The top three lines would be one paragraph, and the next three would be the second paragraph, then the image, then the body text.

Also, you are using double-paragraph returns between paragraphs. That will surely bite you in the *** if you aren't careful. The better way would be to use the space after paragraph attribute to control how much space comes after the paragraph. You could also use space before if you like, or a combination of the two.

Lastly, if the image needs to be in a static position on the page, it should be a free-standing image, but if you would like it to move with the text (in the event that you change the number of lines above or below the image), you could use an in-line image. To do that, you import an image as a standard, free-standing object, cut or copy it (the picture box and image together, not just the image) to the clipboard, place the text cursor on a blank paragraph return that will be between paragraphs and paste. The picture box needs to be able to fit within the text box (including factors such as text indents and text box insets) or you will get the overset text indicator. Also, the leading is best set to auto for that particular paragraph, but if you try a large image with 10 on auto type and then change the leading on the image paragraph to 12, you will see what I mean.

    Fantastic !!

MM -- Thank you for all of that !

I will have a look at these practices & fix up the way I do the returns and the problem will not... return.

Re: Problem with text overlapping in display with QXP8.1

I too have experienced this problem, though it occurs when deleting any character/space in one text box and causes all the text from the next text box to move in to the first and overlap on top of the original text. Quark support were unable to fix or diagnose the problem but have in our case also asked for us to send the file in so hopefully they'll fix this in a future revision of 8... we're using 8.12 on macs running 10.5.8 at the moment.
