QuarkXPress 8.1 + Snow Leopard = Major font issues (leading, all sorts)

Hi all, I recently upgraded my Mac to Snow Leopard after hearing that QXP 8.1 was fully compatible. My font manager, FontAgent Pro was also compatible. However, opening up a number of documents in Quark reveals that drop shadows are facing the wrong way at random angles, all my leading is incorrect - and nearly every text field is exhibiting the out-of-bounds syndrome. The strange thing is, if I change the leading from 'auto' to something different, just by pressing the 'up' button on the field - the text suddenly remembers what leading it was supposed to have and displays properly. Similarly, if I go into each drop shadows settings, turn it off, hit Apply, turn it on, hit Apple again - my drop shadow displays perfectly! It's as if the document needs kicking to remember just what settings were set. Any ideas? At the moment I'm restoring one of my Macs back to 10.5.8 Leopard just so I can keep working, and not have to fix thousands of these little 'blips'. Cheers,

Same here. Very strange thing about leading, baseline and position of the text in the box. Not everywhere but in many places. I returned to Quark 8.0.2 but nothing changed. Trashing preferences not helped.:( Very sad - magazine ready for print need now tons of work:(

I've only done one or two small things in QXP 8.1 since I upgraded to Snow Leopard so haven't really found much wrong yet. One thing I do know is that Apple have been messing with Helvetica Neue (AGAIN!). They've replaced all the old .dfont files with .ttc versions. Are you using Helvetica Neue (or one of the other Mac system fonts) by any chance?

We have been using Helvetica Neue, yes - in fact the 55 Roman cut won't even load in Quark, yet it's fine in Illustrator and everything else. Though this isn't just down to Apple-used fonts. We've also had problems with Univers too. It's just madness this kind of thing would happen when Quark say "they're ready for Snow Leopard"

I have problems with other fonts - Trade Gothic, Eurostyle, Avant Garde and some others. Very strange problems: Drop Caps are looks smaller than usual, leading are all over the place, and most of the texts looks like with baseshift ( looks like the vertical alignment been changed, but it's not). It's happend after upgrade to Snow Lepard and Quark 8.1 in the same time - so I can't tell for sure if this is Apple or Quark - but the result is very dramatic;(

Probably not the whole problem, but in part this may be due to how legacy documents are being converted to 8; I saw similar drop cap issues. You might try doing an Option-Open to convert the internal flow code of the file; choose Open, and hold down the Option key while you click the name of the file in the dialog and click Open. After opening, if you re-save the file (ideally under a new name to keep your old one), you'll see on subsequent opens that the created and last saved versions in the open dialog both show as 8.0. See if that has any effect...

The documents WERE created in Quark 8. I've been able to share documents with Quark 8 and Quark 8.1 uses happily with no problems on 10.5.8 Leopard. I'll try your suggestion anyhow, see if it works. EDIT: I did what you suggested, and on closer inspection my file actually was created in Quark 7. Via your method, the Save-As copy did say it was now created in 8.0, so it had converted it - however the conversion solved none of my issues at all. All drop shadows are displaces and facing the wrong way still, text boxes are still crashing.

thanks for advise, but it didn't worked for me. FIles from Quark 7 simply crashing Quark 8. Only one thing helps to open it in Quark 7 resave and open again in Quark 8 (it's not resolving any font problem but helps to open files in Quark8). Files from Quark 8 opens OK, but contents same font problems. I heard the only thing is helping is to go back to 10.5.8 and probably Quark 8.0.2. I just don't see myself to do this on all my Macs:( BTW, if I creating new file with same fonts - in new text box everything is working pefect. So, I guess the main problem is openning older files in Snow leopard+Quark 8.1and Quark 7.5. This happens first time in my 20 years expirience.

Yeah, creating new documents is pretty much fine. It's opening the ones you created before, and the ones you really need.

Sorry, but worth a try; doing that sort of conversion can actually address a variety of issue. I have not seen the leading type issues yet in 8, but did see some oddly compressed drop caps, and option open did fix those. While XPress tries to maintain and honor older text flow, I think when you move to a new version option open is a good way to go, since going forward you really are best trying to drop the old file information.

I'm having the same problem now I've upgraded to SL. About a third of the files I open are screwed up, especially with the leading: http://www.violetmount.com/quark3.png

:( still have the most difficult time to open Quark 7.1 projects in Quark 8.1 under Snow Leopard. Quark simply crashing after couple seconds. Some of the files are opening after opening it in 7.5 and re-saving and some of them still crashing 8.1. Any new workout ideas on the subject? Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

any more info on the .ttc fonts, i'd not heard of these. intel and PPC macs flow some fonts differently within quark, perhaps Snow leopard forces something into an intel reflow that leopard didn't.

I found another strange thing. if you 'correct' the direction and appearance of drop shadows of your affected documents in Snow Leopard, then take that SAME document and open it in the same version of Quark, but on Leopard, all the drop shadows are facing the opposite directions!

Hi, I have taken one of my macs back to Leopard v10.5.8, and loaded Quark 6.52, Quark 7.5 & Quark 8.1. All docs I have tested on the old Operating System work perfectly. Have Quark 7.5 & Quark 8.1 running on Snow Leopard v10.6, and on both versions the Drop shadows & fonts are messed up. Does not matter how I open my fonts up; Fusion2, FontAgentPro or FontBook, the Quark docs are displaying the same errors in the same way. Beggars belief how Quark can say they are happy that Quark 8.1 works on Snow leopard... I for one am switching my new designs to CS4, as it works perfectly on my macs running Snow Leopard v10.6. Quark you are denting your already tarnished reputation... and why are you calling it live transparancy, and not PDF/X_4 compatible instead?!?
